Forbes Runs Favorable Write Up Of New GHz PowerMacs
by , 11:30 AM EST, January 31st, 2002
Forbes.com has run a favorable mention of Apple's new GHz PowerMacs, which bears notice mostly because its intended market is largely not a Mac-user base. Arik Hesseldahl, a reporter for Forbes.com who has often covered Apple-related news for the magazine, says that Apple has finally broken the GHz barrier. From the article:
This is just what Apple needs in the performance department. Previously, the fastest G4 chip in an Apple machine was the 867 MHz G4 released in July. But as so many Mac fanatics are quick to point out, there's a lot more to a computer's performance than the raw clock speed of the processor. Still, none will deny themselves the joy of saying a word that has so far eluded them: gigahertz.Chips used in Windows-based PCs from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices have accelerated well into gigahertz territory. Intel recently announced a Pentium 4 chip running at 2.2 GHz and says three GHz are likely by the end of the year. The Motorola -made G4 chips used in Apple computers have until now remained below a threshold that means more for product marketing than anything else.
The article goes on to discuss the as yet unreleased G5 processor from Motorola, and also discusses the importance of Apple's PowerMac line in terms of revenue for the company. You can find more information in the full article.
The Mac Observer Spin:
There is nothing in the Forbes.com piece that is news to most of you who are reading this article, but it will come as news to many of the people reading it at Forbes.com. In technical terms, we like to refer to that as a Good Thing.Observer Comments
