From The Cab - More Information on "Say No" Campaign, with Flyer
by , 1:30 PM EDT, July 14th, 2004
As a follow-up to our earlier article about a group asking people to boycott IDG and Macworld, we were fortunate to strike up a conversation with a cab driver who raised the boycott issue without our prompting. When asked how he was aware of this, he said he was handed a flyer with more information. That flyer:

Say No Flyer
(Click for a Larger Version)
A few things still are still unclear, including the identity of the group protesting. Even with the flyer's expanded information, there is no indication of which group is against IDG and outsourcing.
Perhaps more interesting, according to the cab driver to whom we spoke, the person handing out the flyer appeared to be a young child not old enough to be legally employed. TMO was unable to confirm that, and we are still looking for more information about the group pushing the "Say no to Macworld" message.
The Mac Observer Spin:
If it's true that the group behind this campaign is using children to pass out flyers, it's a curious way to protest concepts such as fair employment. What we find the most perplexing, however, is why there is no information about the group doing the protesting on its literature or the rolling billboard we first brought to you earlier this week.Observer Comments
According to Cult of Mac Blog: "The leafletting is organized by Boston Building Trades Council, a coalition of local unions..."

Wed Jul 14, 2004 5:14 pm Subject: Let me get this straight....
...Boston builds a new convention center, which likely brought lots of work in for the local plumbers, carpenters and electricians. Now that it's open, they want to ruin trade shows there because of job outsourcing? Where do they think they'd be if only "All American" trade shows were allowed? Seems a little, well, DUMB to me!
Besides, who is outsourcing these union workers' trades? Do I send my sink to India to get it unclogged? If anything, their professions are the LEAST likely to be outsourced!
Plus, did these "purists" use an American-made copier to run off the leaflets and non-importred gas to drive their billboard truck around? Welcome to the world economy, folks. Nobody likes losing his/her job for ANY reason, outsourcing or not, and few of us in the tech sector are protected by unions.
Would these protestors rather have IDG (and the new Convention Center) go out of business and have EVERYONE lose their jobs? They don't offer a solution, so what exactly is their point? Sounds more like disorganized bellyachin' to me!

Back in the 50's the horror was automation. Same complaints about job loss. There is even a Twilight Zone episode of the last employee, a smug boss, being replaced by a robot. Then came the gold flow exacerbated by imported cars and Japanese electronics. Before, those times, and after, were the perils of immigrants from Ireland, China, Mexico, etc.
While most of you are too young to remember the 50s, you might recall "Buy American" or the Zenith commercials touting they were quality made by Americans. And the beat goes on...
