Mod Your Mac & Win A Prize in Great Mod Challenge 2004

by , 8:00 AM EDT, July 28th, 2004

MacMod has announced The Great Mac Mod Challenge 2004. Though this Challenge could involve decking out your Mac in headlights, chrome crash bars, and mirrors, perhaps with a raccoon tail attached to a long antenna in the back, MacMod is a Web site that is actually dedicated to that other kind of "mod," modifying your computer.

The Great Mac Mod Challenge is a contest offering prizes to people who can do the best mod to or with their Mac. If you have ever watched The Screen Savers and seen the very cool PC mods that Yoshi does, that's what we are talking about. If you haven't, or even if you have, head over to MacMod and check out the most recent Mod of the Week, a blue glowing Cube. There are many other mods at MacMod that can also help give you an idea of what this is all about. From MacMod:

MacMod is pleased to announce and bring to you "The Great Mod Challenge". You are asking what is this and what does it have to do with me. "The Great Mod Challenge" is your opportunity to win one of many great prizes. All you have to do is Mod an item that fits into one or more of the following categories.

Mod categories include

  • Internal Mods -- modification of motherboards, graphics cards, overclocking, etc.
  • External Mods -- modification to appearance through lighting, painting, remolding, recasing, etc.
  • Peripheral Mods -- modifications to iPods, mice, base stations, etc.
  • Software Mods -- modification at system level such as custom OS install, supporting unsupported hardware, etc.

"**Submissions can be in one of more of these categories. In other words, your mod that you create can contain mods in all of these categories if you wish.**

There is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize, all of which center around an iMac (Rev D). In addition to the above prizes, MacMod will be naming a Worst of Show, Most User-Friendly, Least Original, and Most Original entry. There are also extensive notes on judging and other related information at the site.

The Mac Observer Spin:

We like this contest, and we like it a lot. We would like to encourage you to get involved with the project, and to make your Mac mod ASAP. The modding community is a very fun aspect of the Mac (and PC) world, and we truly enjoy seeing what creative folks can come up with.

Do you think this kind of thing keeps Steve Jobs up at night, just huddled up in a corner in the dark...muttering to himself?

I agree it's all in good fun, but I can see him now... "No no...my designs...my beauuuutiful DESIGNS! LEAVE THEM ALONE!"
