Media 100 To Ship Mac HD Version This Fall

by , 1:00 PM EDT, July 28th, 2004

Media 100 has announced the upcoming release of Version 10 of Media 100 HD(High-Definition). Media 100 HD is a utility designed for professional editing environments. The upcoming release features support for G5 systems running OS X, and also includes numerous performance enhancements most notably support for HD native content. According to Media 100:

Media 100, a unit of Optibase (NASDAQ:OBAS), and a leading provider of advanced media systems, today announced new Version 10 software planned for its initial release of Media 100 HD.  Based on direct user feedback from Media 100’s extensive installed base, Version 10 is Media 100’s biggest Mac-based software release in its history and advances Media 100 HD with many high-value features including:

  • An extensible timeline featuring up to 99 video tracks
  • Accurate, intuitive, real-time RGB color correction
  • Software codec with support for full motion alpha channels
  • Advanced RGB, YUV, HSL real-time keyer with softness and offset controls

Media 100 HD, first previewed at NAB2003 and formally announced at the end of 2003, features real-time 8- and 10-bit uncompressed and compressed native HD and SD editing.  The system also integrates full support for Media 100 i offline formats, allowing the capture of HD content as SD offline-quality media at as little as 5 KB per frame, a first for native HD editing solutions.  Resulting SD offline programs can be automatically conformed at full uncompressed HD resolution.  Supporting both digital and analog video I/O, Media 100 HD is the first integrated solution that bridges the gap between an HD future and a Betacam past.

“We know that the future of Media 100’s activity is dependent on our ability to listen and respond to the needs of our customers,” said Mike Savello, Media 100 vice president of sales and marketing.  “Based on feedback from Media 100 customers at NAB and elsewhere, this new Version 10 feature set is a direct answer to their input.  With support for multiple tracks of video, new color correction capabilities, motion alpha mattes, and an advanced keyer, this new release allows our customers to realize the full benefits of our powerful OS X architecture.”

You can find more information about the upcoming Media 100 HD release at the Media 100 Web site. Media 100 is expected to ship this fall starting at US$12,000.00 included within a G5 workstation.

Mrs. Road used to use Media 100 waaayyy back when, on an 8100. Performance was great for that vintage of machine. The question today is, what do you get for $12,000 that FCP won't do?

I been using M100 since ver 1 (still have my 8100 system too) but recently began the switch to FCP HD. I was getting tough to swallow the annual 3k support contracts and lack of feature upgrades.

I went and bought a Aja Io box to replace my Media 100 box and have been messing around with FCP. I expect to recoup the cost of the box, Mac and software pretty quickly. Although editing in Media 100 is the fastest and easiest NLE around, the support contracts and lack of upgrades, coupled with the low cost combination of Io and FCP HD are pretty much gonna kill them.

There was a time when M100 was the best option around, but the way Macs and software has advanced, it's a moot point which way to go if you need a NLE...

{googles for "Aja Io"} Ah. The breakout box was a must when we were using M100, since most of our video came in on 3/4" tape. But with Firewire and a DVCAM deck that has analog in/out on the back, we haven't needed one at all.

And yes, I remember the multi-kilobuck support contracts well... we bought FCP and DVD Studio Pro for about half that. You'd think that for the $$$, support would actually be able to answer a question on occasion. As it was, I pretty much had to solve all the problems.

Here's the typical "support call" at Chez Road:

Mrs. Road: How does FCP do (something)?
Me: How should I know? You're the one who uses it.
Mrs. Road: Could you look anyway?
Me: (takes a couple of wild-arse guesses, one of which works)
Mrs. Road: Thanks! (gets back to work)

In the M100 days, it was pretty much the same thing, only the names have changed.

lol that's right!!!

BTW when Motion comes out I will finally be able to ditch After Effects too.
Was at NAB this year and had about a 45 minute demo of Motion and am really looking forward to using it.

Dirt Road you're right about the tech support, sad and funny but true.
thanks
