Tattoo You: HP Offers Printable iPod Tattoos (W/Pics)
by , 12:45 PM EDT, August 27th, 2004
As part of today's rollout of "Apple iPod from HP," HP also introduced an iPod add-on called HP Tattoo, a printable sticker for your iPod. The Tattoos are available for customers who purchase an Apple iPod from HP from "select" Circuit City and CompUSA locations, or directly from HPShopping.com.
HP describes the Tattoos as follows:
The ultra-thin HP Printable Tattoos are easy to apply and remove from the player's exterior. They are durable and water-resistant, which helps protect the iPod from scratches and scuffs as music lovers carry it around. HP is working with industry recording studios to offer consumers access to the latest album art from the newest releases.
Sources briefed by HP tell The Mac Observer that the Tattoos stick to the iPod via a non-stick adhesive.
The company has posted a Tattoo Gallery at the HP Digital Music site that features album art from Sting, Ashlee Simpson, The Who, The Cure, Keane, Gwen Stefani, Lloyd Banks, The Hives, and Vanessa Carelton.
From HP's Tattoo Gallery:

A Tattoo from The Cure's album "The Cure."

A full Tattoo of The Who's "Then and Now,"
including the part that wraps around the back of an iPod

The front of The Who's Tattoo
You can find the full HP Tattoo gallery at HP's Digital Music Web site, which requires Flash to get the full demonstration of the stickers.

...the tatoo idea is pretty cool. Thank goodness you can print your OWN designs on special blank tatoo sheets. I assume the designs get printed backwards on the inside of the sheet, so that the design doesn't get immediately scuffed off the exterior. But I'm wondering how the non-stick adhesive back works then. Maybe I'm wrong. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks!
The only thing that I'm a little worried about is that Mac users will be left out in the cold when it comes to the tatoo template software that HP mentions. Not that it'd be too hard to format one yourself, but everything else on the iPod by HP pages only mentions PCs. Not even the iPod itself is listed as being Mac-compatible!

I would think it gets printed on the outside. Better the design gets scuffed than ink gets all over the iPod, even if it is easy to clean off.

Maybe the HP versions will only include PC software? Just a guess.
Accord to this article, the adhesive doesn't come off: http://www.ipodlounge.com/ipodnews_comments.php?id=637_0_7_0_C
I think this is one of the best ideas ever. I am a very unique individual and I really wanted an iPod, not because everyone else had one, but because it is much more convenient to carry an iPod around, rather than tons of cds. However, I had made my cd player my own, there wasn't another one like it anywhere. If i got an iPod, i couldn't do that, and now, with iPod tattoos, i can express myself by simply printing out any design on want on the special paper, and tada!, my individuality has returned!
These things are really cool!!! you can just print them out and paste them on using the HP site's premade ones (they have music artists, fashion designers, and weird urban ones!) or your own images! whichever you choose, they come out great! (well, i have an HP printer-- so i don't know) Unless you have your ipod with you WHEREVER you go, like outside in the hot sun, a LITTLE bit of residue might get on it, but with just a little rubbing, you can fix it. Also, you can take it in the rain without causing smudges! (well, it might burn out the electronics and stuff) All in all, I think its a great idea to make your ipod stand out in the crowd without getting a dinky small 1,000 song ipod mini in a color you want!

No tatoos for iPod mini. Btw, isn't colour of the iPod mini is an indication of individualism?
That's because HP doesn't sell an iPod mini, just the regular size iPods. Too bad, I would have used the tattoo's if they made them for the mini as well. But maybe their sticker won't stick well to the anodized aluminum that the iPod mini is made of.
WHen someone finds some sort of iPod mini tattoo, LET ME KNOW! I'm so sad without one.
The iPod folks might think that the minis are colored so tattoos might look funky when its on diffrent colored minis, but COME ON, ya came up with a whole mp3 player people, why can't you make something to make it personal?????? Thanx fur listenin'. ---Almost mini
