HP Offers 1 Year iPod Warranty [Updated]
by , 5:30 PM EDT, August 27th, 2004
HP will be offering a one year warranty on the new Apple iPod from HP, according to sources who have been briefed by HP about the product and the company's retail marketing strategy. By contrast, Apple offers a 90-day warranty for its iPod, with an additional 1 year of care past the first 90 days available for US$59.
HP introduced the Apple iPod by HP today in a media event to roll out a variety of new consumer electronics devices.
As part of the company's warranty efforts, HP will also be handling its own iPod support functions for HP customers. HP has set up a training center for its support staff to learn iPod-related support issues. An HP spokesperson told us that the company hopes to be able to leverage its longer history of supporting Windows users than Apple.
To that end, the spokesperson said, HP made minor changes to its iPod's packaging. In keeping with its consumer-friendly approach to computers, HP is including color-coded cables to help its Windows PC users understand what gets plugged into what. The company is also including an installation poster that includes directions for what goes where.

Agreed -- the article is wrong. Apple offers a full one-year warranty on the iPod, with only 90 days of phone support. You can still go in to an Apple store and have your iPod replaced if needed. So there's no real significance in the fact that HP is also offering a 1 year warranty.
Seems like The Mac Observer needs to check its facts before posting articles.

darkhawk,
You're wrong. The Applecare program for iPod only bumps the warranty up to 2 years. Not 3 as you stated.
Well - it's down to interpretation: it's three years out from the purchase date. Applecare is really two years, one year from the purchase date.
When the iPods first came out, it was only three months worldwide. In New Zealand, consumer law dictated that three months was invalid and must be twelve months instead.
I doubt that the New Zealand requirement made a blind bit of difference to Apple, but it wasn't long before the initial warranty period was stretched out to match the rest of the Apple product line of twelve months.
AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod
Key Features
Comprehensive service and support
Extends telephone support from 90 days to up to two years
Extends hardware coverage from one year to up to two years
Provides expert support for both Mac and Windows users
I would have link to it directly but it's to the online store so it would just die.
To summarize a correction to the original article and responding posts: the iPod, like all Apple products, comes with a 1-year limited warranty that covers the iPod, plus included accessories and software. The iPod also comes with 90 days of complimentary technical support (via phone, e-mail, etc.) that covers one incident. The AppleCare Protection Plan for the iPod extends the hardware coverage and phone support to two years from the date of purchase, with no limits on the number of incidents covered by tech support. This information covers purchases in the USA; I can't comment on Apple's policies elsewhere.
There is no interpretation about it. Apple's warranty on the iPod is one year, with 90 days free phone support. AppleCare extends that by one more year, for a total of two years. AppleCare for the Mac computers extends it by an additional two years, for a total of three. This does not apply to the iPod.
