New HP iPod Ad: "You Let Musical Worlds Collide"

by , 12:15 PM EDT, August 30th, 2004

Hot on the virtual heels of Apple's new "Walkie Talkie Man" iPod ad, HP has posted its first iPod commercial on the HP Web site. HP's ad is taking a completely different tack than Apple's highly successful iPod ads, and are based on a theme of "You let musical worlds collide."

Those words scroll by on an iPod screen, and the ad then features several kinds of dancing from different subcultures, each with music from yet other subcultures. For instance, the first scene shows line dancing in a country music dance hall with hip-hop music playing. The music is properly timed to the dancing, right down to the obligatory line-dancing clap.

Other scenes include 50s music at a punk show, dance music at a square dance, and bluegrass fiddles blaring away for some street break dancing. Some screen shots from the ad:

Hip-Hop line dancing.

Bluegrass break dancing.

The ad closes with a voice over saying: "Introducing the Apple iPod from HP; your PC will never be the same again." You can find the ad at HP's TV advertising Web page. Thanks to Observer Creole for the heads up on the new ad.

The Mac Observer Spin:

We like this ad, and we like the completely different approach that HP is taking with its campaign. The notion of being able to carry all of your music with you being a collision of musical worlds is a very interesting theme, and the style of the ads should be noticeable.

....they're our friends now, too.

I'm bummed there's no QuickTime contect on HP's webiste, but I'm more happy that there will soon be QuickTime pre-installed on every HP consumer PC.

The ipod was white in the commercial. Didn't HP have a blue one when HP made the announcement that they were using the ipod? I wonder why white. And by the way, I din't care for the commercial.

Subject: hPod at Costco?

I just checked the Costco web site and the HP iPod is right there on the front page.

Since Costco sells HP computers, I wonder if this means that the HP iPod will be available at Costco's warehouses. If so, they will probably sell a ton of them. People go into Costco with checkbooks open looking for big ticket items.

Considering that the iPod is not currently supporting WMA files, hp should have gone ahead and used Quicktime. I'm all for hp's efforts, but I kind of get the feeling I had when I saw how the Pepsi/iTunes promotion was going; you know, kind of half-hearted. Well, time will tell.

The video plays but it is very choppy and not good video. Is it just my 800mhz iBook G3? Are there any settings to get right?

Hp Invent is their slogan but they sell the iPod invented by Apple... At least they recognize a better product when they see it. Now if they would just have a good look at the Mac and OS X...

Subject: Those Country Line Dancers...

I can tell you they're not from Texas! We don't do that lame line dancing bull crap here! It's called the TEXAS two-step for a reason. But some of the guys were quite hot. I'd like to see more of them .. lol! BTW the commercial we get here in Texas shows an extended version of the country line dancing. All the other "scenes" that the internet commercial shows are deleted from the commercial I saw on TV. HMM .. I guess they're trying to target us more specifically. I won't bite though. HP sux and Apple sux worse .. my PC that I built and customized myself totally 0wnz j00 Apple f00lz .. lol.

OK - you oh so totally cool Texas brat. Funny how we here in the Northeast extend all due courtesy & respect to the original Texas Two-Steppers, but you can't manage a kind or gracious word for us. You must have been raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Where are your manners? Yeh, we do the Two-Step -in fact, we were Two-Stepping around the dance floor while the line dancers took the middle. You must have missed that while you were drooling over our line dancing friend. He would never consider giving you a second glance with your rude self. (In our dance clubs, there is room for everyone, couples and singles) We know how to mix it up and have a ball, get funky, bump & grind, buckle polish, etc. Simple Texas two-step can get BORING - Boring to do and boring to watch - But, if that's the only dance you know, then its your loss. And guess what, we're the ones in the commercial, NOT YOU! How do you like us now??? Guess whose LOL???
