Apple Notes, Fixes .Mac Mail Outage

by , 2:00 PM EDT, September 28th, 2004

Observer readers reported problems with their .Mac e-mail accounts Tuesday after receiving messages saying they were over their storage quota. The problem now appears to be fixed, after Apple admitted the problem affected a small number of users.

.Mac users who sent e-mails to some .Mac accounts were getting messages saying the message could not be sent. The problems appeared to have lasted a little over two hours.

Apple's .Mac support site later stated:

10:00 am PDT, September 28th, 2004:
A small number of customers were having difficulties receiving mail due to database issues. The sender of the e-mail will receive a bounce-back claiming that the destination account is over quota. The issue is now resolved and mail should be delivered as expected.

It is not known exactly how many users were affected by the problem, or how long the problem lasted.

Subject: .mac mail still down here in philly

About two hours ago our .mac account suddenly asked for passwords which it rarely does. I dismissed the dialogs but haven't recieved a single e-mail since.

Guest, that happens whenever Mail can't connect to a mail server. It's a very bad feature of Mail IMNHO, but it's been there from the beginning.

Even better, if you cancel the dialogue box, Mail just takes that mailbox offline, even though it still has the same password still stored.

In other words, you haven't gotten any mail since then because your .Mac mailbox is offline in Mail.

To fix this, go to the Mailbox pulldown menu, to Online Status, and select the mailbox in question. That will take it back online.

Subject: .mac problems in Finland, Europe

All .mac services, mail - web pages - homepages, has been down for two days. I have used explorer and safari. No success.

Might to be some problems i Apple site to startup new increased .mac accounts?
