European iTMS Expansion Coming In October
by , 3:30 PM EDT, September 29th, 2004
An Apple exec has told Reuters that the company will be expanding its European iTunes Music Store in October. Vice president Eddie Cue told the news service that Apple is on pace to cover "a good portion" of Western Europe, whereas Apple is currently operating its music store only in France, Germany, and the UK, as well as the US. From Reuters:
"We are well on pace to launch more EU stores. We will do it next month," Eddie Cue, Apple's vice president of applications told music executives at the annual Popkomm conference in the German capital on Wednesday.
In typical Apple style, the computer maker gave scant details of the hotly anticipated launch. He told reporters on the sidelines it would likely include more than five new countries in the next wave of stores.
"It will cover a good portion of Western Europe," he said of the launch, but declined to elaborate.
There is additional information in the full article, including news of a 6-month wait at some BMW dealerships for that auto maker's iPod adapter, and other related info.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple's music machine keeps rolling, and is making steady progress. Considering the obstacles to uniform pricing across the patchwork of countries that comprise the European Union, a prerequisite for Apple, the company has actually done quite well in rolling out its European iTMS.For those keeping score at home, those obstacles include a plethora of different and sometimes conflicting copyright laws, as well as a host of different agencies whose job it is to regulate those copyrights, and manage royalties generated from copyrights.

Perhaps Canada is not a priority since p2p music downloading is not illegal.
For those of you waiting for the launch in Japan...check out this article.

I sent an e-mail last year to Apple asking when iTMS would be available in Canada, and was told "early in the first quarter of 2004". Still, we in Canada are left without an iTMS. It's absolutely ridiculous. Some may very well say, "Well Canada has different copyrighting laws, which makes it very difficult to bring a Canadian version of iTMS", and to that I say, "And the European Union doesn't?" As the article suggests, a European iTMS is fraught with countless problems that are far greater than a Canadian iTMS.
Wake up Apple. There are other people living in this world other than in the US or Europe.

I know nothing about why iTunes isn't in Canada, but here's a little logic.
iTunes sales = minor profit from songs = large profit from more iPod sales
Can you give me ONE good reason why Apple would not want to make money from Canadians? Because I can't think of one.
Clearly, whatever's holding them up are factors outside of Apple's control, just like in Japan.
But maybe I'm wrong. Can you point me to some evidence that Apple is avoiding profit for their own amusement?

I don't think it's Apple doesn't want to make money off Canadians, because they've been clearly doing that with iPod, and just about every Apple product. It's rather what they're focusing on; maybe a Euro iTMS would be more high-profile in the newspapers because people said that it would never happen, given the complexity of Euro copyright laws. Apple's iTMS has invested all of its resources in trying to make this happen, and are actually expanding in Europe, when all of us in Canada (and the same goes for people in Japan and Australia, among many other countries) are left high and dry.
