Apple Posts iMovie 5.0.1 Update
by , 6:25 PM EST, January 27th, 2005
As pointed out by forum member Spider, Apple has released iMovie 5.0.1, an update to iMovie HD, which is part of the just-released iLife '05 suite. The update notes say simply, "iMovie HD 5.0.1 addresses issues related to video and audio synchronization for DV projects and other minor issues."
The update can be downloaded through Software Update if you have iLife '05 installed, or downloaded through VersionTracker. You can find more information on iLife at Apple's Web site, where it is priced at US$79. Amazon is currently offering it for $73.99.

When I edit clip lengths in one part of my project, I find that other clip lengths have been drastically shortened once the transitions re-render. I find myself bouncing back and forth, with no solution to the problem. I have tried starting fresh with longer clips overall to makeup for this, but still can't get the edits I want. Very frustrating. Is there a way to anchor changes once I make them? Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
I have tried two ways. Selecting a single clip to edit as well as selecting "similar clips" in hopes of working around it. Both ways get the same result. Another clip somewhere else in the timeline is drastically shortened automatically, and if I try to correct it, something else gets ridiculously shortened.
Has Apple has sold me a string of worthless software? Yes. I produced a Keynote presentation, exported it as a QuickTime, then imported it into iMovie, so as to save is it as a DVD. It was a good quality movie until iMovie got ahold of it. Then the quality went south. Result? Sure, I can save it to a DVD using iDVD, but it looks lousy. iMovie turned clarity into blurry and ruined it.
Someone said Keynote and iMovie are fine if you want to carry your Mac everywhere. If you want to do anything else, like share your work with anybody, forget it. Apple has locked us into junk.

What were the settings you used when you exported the Quicktime from keynote?
Also, what sized fonts did you use? You have to expect some softening whenever you go from computer to video. A DVD will play back a 720x480 image that's interlaced. Your computer screen is (probably) 1024x800 and progressive. So no matter what you do, you won't be able to get the same sharpness on a DVD.
I'm more interested in the quicktime settings, though. I'm wondering what kind of choices they give you there and what you picked.

If you are going to try to save to DVD, I suggest using the custom settings for QT export and export to DV (which should give no compression), then import into iMovie and/or iDVD. This will prevent the problem with double-compressing the file. Else it will use Sorensen 3 compression for the export.
