TMO Reports - IDC Analyst Says Halo Effect Exists in Australia
by , 8:00 AM EST, February 23rd, 2005
According to market research firm IDC, wide adoption of the iPod is attracting Windows users to switch to the Mac platform, at least in Australia.
This halo effect, Mr. Sager explains, is partly responsible for a more than 49% jump in Australian Mac sales, according to IDC analyst Michael Sager. However, there are other factors at work in this jump, including Apple's increased retail exposure. The Mac is now found in many more retail stores, including the David Jones and Domayne chains. Also, Apple improved supply to satisfy pent-up demand for the iMac G5, which had been in short supply.
The so called iPod "halo effect" is a theory advanced by Apple and assorted Apple observers. People who have never used a Mac, but are dissatisfied with Windows, have become aware that an alternative platform exists through their experience with the iPods. Pleased with the iPod, the theory says, some fraction of these users will decide to purchase a Macintosh computer.
Such issues, however, were responsible for only a small amount of the increase in Mac sales, Mr. Sager said.
Observer Comments
sadly some small-time apple dealers in sydney, for example, are not equipped to handle such growth so technically potential in australia could be really huge.
in sydney anyway, TaylorSquare, City, Broadway and hopefully full-fledged Apple Store would be best positioned to handle continued Halo effect and Switchers... Domayne, David Jones, etc... they can handle newcomers, but mostly for iPod-related stuff, not systems...
Having the Mac sold where people can see them in person and try them out is what is selling the Macs and all of Apple's products. Before you were so limited to where you could see a Mac or any Apple product in person. Now that Apple has it's own retail stores and others are also carrying the product the exposure is really helping sales. People can see the Mac and relize that it is nothing like it was 10 years ago. Most people think of Apple products and all they can remember is the Apple LC or Quadra.
Talking about really old and out dated.

Those computers were awesome compared to what windows was offering at the time. You could edit video on a Quadra - try that on a '486.
Not only that, but ironically, the 630 I started out on was $200 *cheaper* than the x86 box I was considering at the time.
The capper:
It is still being used as a MIDI sequencer to this day.
Many guys still don't know what is a current Mac is like. I was talking to the boss of a Sushi shop. He just bought a Compaq notebook for his business. I asked him why he didn't buy a Mac. He said Mac is a great machine but expensive and don't have any business software that he needed.
I found out that all he needed are Quicken and Microsoft Excel.

i would say following on from this post i made, though, at least it is starting to EXPOSE people to what a mac is... for example the sushi boss that would have seen it at a David Jones (a kind of Sears for you US people) and Domayne (it's like an upmarket version of CircuitCity+Ikea)... but would not have walked into an 'apple centre'
