Apple releases Java Security Update
by , 6:55 PM EST, February 22nd, 2005
Apple released Security Update 2005-002 Tuesday evening, an update that delivers a number of security enhancements, and is recommended for all Mac users.
Specific updated components include: Java Web Start, JavaPluginCocoa.bundle, JavaScriptCore, and Core Java classes. Detailed information on the update can be found here, and say the following about the update:
"Impact: Updates Java to address an issue where an untrusted applet could gain elevated privileges and potentially execute arbitrary code.
"Description: A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in may allow an untrusted applet to escalate privileges, through JavaScript calling into Java code, including reading and writing files with the privileges of the user running the applet. Releases prior to Java 1.4.2 on Mac OS X are not affected by this vulnerability. Further information is available in Document ID 57591 from Sun."

I admit, I enjoyed putting snappy in the subject line...
Seriously, try Coctail (google is your friend), it can do simple maintenance tasks, including pre-binding, which is responsible for system snappiness after an update...
btw, you don't have to buy, it has a really long testing period.
Yes, I think one of the reasons people report that the system is running faster is the maintenance done by the update. I generally leave my computers "awake" all night, though I put the displays to sleep, so that the CRON tasks are run as scheduled. MacJanitor and Cocktail are good utilites for running the manually.
