The rated battery life on an iPod goes up because Apple expects users to be doing less and less with it. My iPod runs fine as long as I sit next to an electrical outlet. As soon as I disconnect it from the outlet the battery starts dying like an astronaut without oxygen.

My "old" mini claimed 4 or so hours of life. The new one says 18.

You're saying that they use a different method of measuring this now then they used to? Where did you read that?

Now that the photo versions are priced at "regular" levels, it will be interesting to see how they do. Well, if you want more then 20 GB it's the ONLY choice, now, so I'm sure you'll see more of them around. This is the beginning of the end for the B&W screens!

Looks like you're right. I hadn't even noticed that. Come to think of it, I've NEVER seen anyoen with a Gold mini before. I guess they just weren't that popular.

So you're having battery life problems with your iPod mini? You do have a mini right? Cause you wouldn't be comparing the life of your hard drive based iPod to that of a solid state mini with no moving parts right? Cause that would just be stupid.

Boy, I'm really confused right now. Except for the comment about the colors, I can't figure out what all these posts are about.

I'm just not following this conversation very well.

Apple has a good post on AppleCare on the differences between the two generations of iPod minis.

Biff seems to be suggesting that the _mini_ has no moving parts, when infact it is the shuffle that is flash-drive based.

This is the source of the confusion.

That battery that is dying like an astronaut without oxygen may need to be reset. Engadget or MacFixit or somebody had a tutorial on how to do that so google it.

I for one am sorry to see the Goldie go. I had my heart set on a gold mini - well, I guess a silver with 2 additional gigs and a longer battery life for the same price is some consolation

Bookman, you can buy one from eBay.

The good thing about iPod is its popularity. You can easier sell your earlier model to help fund the purchase of a newer model.

No, the battery rating goes up because Apple improved it. There's no way to extend an iPod with 8 hours of battery life to anywhere near 18 hours unless maybe, and this is a slim chance, a person doesn't listen to any music on it and disables the display. Try applying some logic to your lies.

I'm not looking for "manly" as I am badass. I mean, silver electronics were big, and apple has done well with the clean white look, but I think throwing a nice black in the mix would be pretty sweet, and definitely offer a stark contrast to the plain white iPods.

Minis DROPPED in price, went UP in capacity, and the battery life is no WAY BETTER!
