TMO Reports - Apple Updates iPod Mini With 4GB & 6GB Starting at $199 (UPDATED)
by , 8:30 AM EST, February 23rd, 2005
Apple Computer announced Wednesday second generation iPods minis with a 4 gigabyte (GB) capacity, starting at US$199 and a new 6GB model at $249.
Both models are available in pink, blue, silver, green colors. The gold-colored model has been dropped. The iPod mini line debuted in January 2004, priced at $249.00.
Apple also changed the icons on the new iPod mini models, making them match the color of their cases. For instance, the blue iPod mini has blue menu, forward, backward, and play/pause icons on the clickwheel, while the pink iPod mini has pink icons.
Both iPod mini models feature increased battery life of up to 18 hours, the company said. Previously, Apple was quoting eight hours of battery life on one charge.
All iPod mini models include earbud headphones, a belt clip case, a USB 2.0 cable, and a CD with iTunes 4.7.1 for Mac and Windows computers.
With the new models, Apple is no longer providing a FireWire cable, instead favoring only the USB 2.0 interface. USB 2.0 has a theoretical top speed of 480 megabits per second while FireWire has a theoretical top speed of 400 Mbps. Previously iPod minis shipped with both cables. Users wanting to use the faster speed FireWire cable can purchase one directly from Apple for $19.

My "old" mini claimed 4 or so hours of life. The new one says 18.
You're saying that they use a different method of measuring this now then they used to? Where did you read that?
EDIT:
Now that the photo versions are priced at "regular" levels, it will be interesting to see how they do. Well, if you want more then 20 GB it's the ONLY choice, now, so I'm sure you'll see more of them around. This is the beginning of the end for the B&W screens!

I think you meant gold has been dropped. Or did they call it something else?
Looks like you're right. I hadn't even noticed that. Come to think of it, I've NEVER seen anyoen with a Gold mini before. I guess they just weren't that popular.
QuoteSo you're having battery life problems with your iPod mini? You do have a mini right? Cause you wouldn't be comparing the life of your hard drive based iPod to that of a solid state mini with no moving parts right? Cause that would just be stupid.Smith wrote:

Boy, I'm really confused right now. Except for the comment about the colors, I can't figure out what all these posts are about.
* A Guest said that his battery doesn't last long and implies that Apple is inflating the numbers they put on their web page.
* Biff asked if he was comparing his mini to a shuffle.
* Another Guest posted tech specs on the mini and says Biff is wrong. (?)
I'm just not following this conversation very well.
Apple has a good post on AppleCare on the differences between the two generations of iPod minis.

Folks, Smith is obviously lying. He's vying to take the Lead Troll title from Reality Check. Check his recent comments, and he's blatantly anti-Apple. Anybody who is that bitter would not have bought an iPod. He knows not of which he talks and is just trying to rile you all up. Don't try to make sense of him or his comments.
"The rated battery life on an iPod goes up because Apple expects users to be doing less and less with
it."
No, the battery rating goes up because Apple improved it. There's no way to extend an iPod with 8 hours of battery life to anywhere near 18 hours unless maybe, and this is a slim chance, a person doesn't listen to any music on it and disables the display. Try applying some logic to your lies.

Man, they totally should've busted out the black mini, that thing would've sold like no other.
Hmmmm....why not develop a line of "manly" miniPod covers. Make them out of carbon fiber weave or graphite composites, and they slip over the iPod like a jacket.
Manly colors and bullet-proof resistance in one package...

I'm not looking for "manly" as I am badass. I mean, silver electronics were big, and apple has done well with the clean white look, but I think throwing a nice black in the mix would be pretty sweet, and definitely offer a stark contrast to the plain white iPods.
you need to go to www.ipodbattery.com you can order the battery to fix it
if you are Uk based you can get replacement Ipod batteries at http://www.batterytrader.com they do 1st 2nd 3rd 4th generation plus Mini Shuffle and Photo batteries, all come with printed instructions and tools to enable a home fit.
