iPod Updater 2005-02-22 Delivers Many Changes
by , 11:00 AM EST, February 23rd, 2005
With iPod Updater 2005-02-22, released Wednesday, all of Apple's iPods ever released now sport similar main screen menus with "Music" and "Shuffle Songs" options on the first screen.
The updater also includes new iPod mini that supports the second-generation models released today, as well as adding support for charging and syncing over USB to first-generation minis.
Lastly, the iPod shuffle's software has been revved to version 1.1, which adds support for the iPod shuffle Battery Pack and increased software stability.
The updater is 24.3MB.

i updated my 3g ipod to v. 2.3 and did NOT get a "shuffle songs" main menu option (as promised by Apple's website). I just got a "Music" menu option.
anyone else have a this problem?
If you go into:
SETTINGS > MAIN MENU
...and scroll down to where it says "games" and "Backlight," do you have the "Shuffle Songs" option there?
The idea of including the shuffle in the main menu is such a parsimonious feature upgrade (what about all deep sleep amnesia, editing OTG playlists and all the other updates they could have included?) that it seems as though it may have another true purpose. Of course, it could also be just to emphasize the utility of the shuffle feature to encourage existing iPod owners to also buy a Shuffle.

PROBLEMS!
Okay, so I have a 3G 20gig iPod. When the updater launches, it tells me I need an update (from software version 2.2), but the "update" button is dim, and not-clickable, only restore is clickable. What's the deal?
Well, I did "restore" and I could see my iPod getting fixed in the dock, but then iPod updater froze, couldn't be force quit, so I had to manually restart my computer (suck), but my iPod had the new software on it and was empty, so I just turned the computer back on and loaded it back up with 3600+ songs. Stupid freezy computer *shakes fist*
Well I downloaded it, ran the updated on my 4gen 40 gig and it said I did not need to, "Software up to date" it said. So I continued on than ejected my Ipod some time later and the warning =signcame on staing "Itunes cannot read this , reinstall software" and the ipod symbol on the hard drive was a external disk symbol instaed of I[pod. Wont be updating anmore

For all of you in this predicament, are you updating on the computer you formatted it on. It's very important to remember that you can use a PC formatted iPod on a Mac or PC, but a Mac formatted one only works with Mac. If you use a Mac to update your PC formatted iPod, it will only allow you to restore to Mac settings, not update.

I think this was exactly the problem. I got my iPod last xmas, and formatted it with my windows machine. However, I was pretty sure that I was able to update it with previous updates to this one on my mac with no problems. Either way, now it's all reformatted for mac and working better than ever. I think I may even be getting better battery life? (that could just be my head messing with me though)
I'm having a similar problem to spyxu02, but much nastier. During the 2.3 update my 3G ipod went completely dead and has not responded since, although when I listened to see if I could hear the disc spinning I did notice a quite unappealing clicking/squealing noise. It will no longer respond in any way, my Mac will not recognize it, and it won't even respond when placed in the dock that I just have plugged in strictly for recharging. I've tried resetting and the like, but as I said, it doesn't respond at all. When I called Apple support their response was literally "That doesn't sound good. All I can really do is send you some ipod faqs articles though." They also suggested the Apple discussion boards but there was no help there. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I am having the same problem !! I updated to version 2.3 last night, a box popped up asking for me to leave the iPod connected whilst it ran it's update. I left it 7 hours overnight and the screen is blank on the iPod, not responding at all, I plug it into the PC when iTunes is on and it makes a noise as if something has been plugged in but fails to charge or appear on the iTunes side menu. If anyone knows how to remedy this I would love to hear from them....musky72@yahoo.com
