Yale Daily News: Mac Presence Grows at Yale
by , 1:25 PM EST, February 24th, 2005
At Yale, the Platform Wars are back, or at least given new relevance in today's computing market, according to an article published in Yale Daily News, the student-run newspaper for Yale University. Reporter Daniel Holevoet wrote that Apple's recent resurgence as a brand, and the subsequent rise in Mac sales, has resulted in an increased Mac presence at Yale University with 20 percent of students and 33 percent of faculty using Macs.
"With a reinvented, cutting-edge operating system and a cool, sleek design, Apple is clawing its way to technological equality on campus," wrote Mr. Holevoet. "Products like iPod and iTunes have transformed the Apple brand into a status symbol as much as a technological tool."
According to the article, several factors have contributed to this rise in Mac popularity, including Mac OS X's Unix foundation, the phenomenon of iPod and iTunes, and the adware and virus problems that so many Windows users have experienced in recent years.
The full article looks at some specific students who have chosen Mac, Windows, or Linux, and why they made their choices. In addition, the article examines how and where Linux has become popularity on the Yale campus.

QuoteReuben Grinberg '05 said the "less is more" philosophy of Apple products was also a reason he chose to go with a Mac
I like that line. But what bothers me a bit about the article is where they speak of Apple's 10~12% overall marketshare: are they referring to the active userbase or is it an marketshare average covering all of the product lines? Or perhaps trend analysis (in which case, Apple's position looks very good)?

I thought Yale people were supposed to be, like, smart and stuff. As much as I'd love to believe otherwise, I know of no universe where Apple has a "10 to 12 percent national market share" in computers.
Depends on how you measure it. In the DTP universe, it is a low estimate. Take out ATMs and POS computers from the Windows numbers (and those machines that were purchased with, but do not actually run, Windows) and that number may very well be possible.

"Graves said his experience as a Windows user would make switching more difficult. He said he is more comfortable using Microsoft programs and prefers Windows Media Player to Apple's iTunes."
Ya, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, what kinda dope PREFERS Windows Media Player over iTunes? That's like prefering a broken Yogo over a BMW.
Market share depends on what level are you sampling from. Overall computers sold, Apple's market share is low. If you're sampling from certain market segments, I believe you will find that Apple's market share would easily fall into 10 to 20 percent range, if not higher.
Using that blanket statement about the student body and alumni implying that they aren't smart isn't going to win you many friends. Would you care to comment on what college you are attending - possibly a rival school? ![]()
This doesn't surprise me, although it's always pleasant to have it reported on.
At private schools where kids are concerned about the cool factor while studying in public and have lots of Mommy and Daddy's money to burn, Apple will definitely do well (Northwestern included, as I smile every time I glance at all the iBooks being used in the student union)
Thu Feb 24, 2005 4:33 pm Subject: Marketshare Universe?
3% marketshare is the number I always hear, but that's worldwide, right? What's the national marketshare? What's the user install base?
Also, why are we counting ATM's and POS terminals? Are we going to count calculators too?
I think when consumers hear the numbers they are mislead. I can understand including computers for business, but in many ways that matters little to consumers outside of MS Office compatibility.
What's Apple's national consumer marketshare? I bet that might be the 10-12% number they quoted. That sounds right on the money in this Universe! All you have to do is take a sprint about town to see Macs everywhere! It can't be 3% in the consumer market.
This whole thing reminds me of the MHz myth thing. If you're going to count then compare Apple's to Apple's and Oranges to Oranges. There should be a consumer marketshare number. Is there one now?
Sydde, I think you're wrong. 10-12% sounds right on for the consumer market. But since they seem to be counting everything with a chip in it, let's add iPods! Oops, now Macs have a killer marketshare. Poor PCs niche market.
Yah, ha, ha, ha, ha,ha,.. ![]()
