Griffin Announces FireWire Cables for New iPod mini, iPod photo

by , 1:50 PM EST, February 24th, 2005

Griffin Technology announced Thursday Dock400, a FireWire cable for Apple's new iPod mini and iPod photo product lines. The Dock400 FireWire cable is intended to be used to connect your current generation iPod to your Mac or PC via FireWire, as Apple only supplies USB 2.0 cables with the new models.

The Dock400 is 48" long, and is made with Apple-approved FireWire connectors. According to Griffin, it can be used with either an iPod dock or by being plugged directly into an iPod.

The Dock400 is priced at US$17.95 and will begin shipping in the first week of March. You can find pre-order links and more information at Griffin's Web site.

Apple is selling the equivalent product for $19 (shipping a week from now) and already sells the USB & Firewire iPod cable for the same price, shipping within a day or two.

$1.00 cheaper, and choice is good!

Perhaps, Apple will stop selling these cables some time in the future.

In any case, choice is good.

I'm not sure what the hold-up is on deliveries of this cable: it seems to be the same cable provided with the Griffin PowerPod, a car power adaptor that has a Firewire socket. The PowerPod is $24.95, just $7 more than the cable alone.

There are several sources of retractable iPod cables. Most are 3 ft long and are somewhat delicate compared to the Griffin cable.
