Apple Offers iPod Discount to Students

by , 12:35 PM EST, February 25th, 2005

Apple is now offering iPod discounts to students through the Hot Deals page for the Apple Store for Education. Students can get the 2 gigabyte iPod mini starting at US$179, the 6GB iPod mini starting at $229, 20GB iPods for $269, 30GB iPod photos for $319, and the 60GB iPod photo for $419.

iPod shuffles are not discounted.

You can find more information at the Hot Deals page for the Apple Store for Education.

Apple has also updated the Hot Deals page for MacMall, ClubMac, and Publishing Perfection at the Macintosh Product Guide. The Mac Product Guide is a list of Mac compatible hardware and software products on the market. The Hot Deals section of the Product Guide features several Mac retailers and special offers that one can only get, at least in theory, at the Hot Deals page.

The new MacMall Hot Deals page has offers on an Epson photo printer, a consumer digital camera, three LCD displays, and a USB pen drive. You can find the MacMall Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

The new ClubMac Hot Deals page has offers on DVD-R media, two The Sims titles, an Epson photo printer, an iPod remote, an LCD display, Drive Genius, a FireWire drive, iPod speakers, photo paper, and a card reader. You can find the ClubMac Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

The new Publishing Perfection Hot Deals page has offers on publishing and design software, including Discreet Combustion 3, the Digital Delight Bundle, Adobe's Creative Suite Premium, Eye Candy 5, Flight Check Studio for QXP 6, and more. The retailer is also offering a tablet, a scanner, a photo printer, and a book for time standards. You can find the Publishing Perfection Hot Deals page at Apple's Web site.

Probably about the same time they scrapped the 40GB iPods and made the 20GB the only normal iPod they sell.

Apple does offer a slight discount on the 1GB shuffle. In the education store it is $139 instead of the $149 in the regular store. At least the do if you go in as a homeschooler - kudos to Apple for recognizing us as educators!

The problem with that is the added tax and shipping cost from Apple. You can probably get it for the same TOTAL price or maybe even less on the internet from a reseller, with no tax and free shipping. It may only be a few bucks difference but the added tax & shipping really negates the value of a student discount from Apple.

I hate the fact that we have to pay tax when buying from Apple on the internet, unlike purchasing from other out-of-state resellers on the internet.

Is this new news? I'm a teacher have bought my iPod (and my sons' iPods) at this site, and they've always sold for approximately the same discount.

BTW, Apple and all other clicks-&-bricks retailers have to charge sales tax on items sold in states where they have physical stores. Sorry, Studentx; while taxes are never fun, it's the current balance worked out on this matter and applicable all over the US.

Apple ships orders over $50 free (which means all iPods, of course). Although all they guarentee is ground shipping, they often deliver quicker. I ordered a 30GB iPod photo with free shipping for $319 on Thursday (with free engraving), it shipped Friday from China and is expected at my house in NY by 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

They do charge tax (as they are required to), but they are still cheaper than Amazon.com would be (and Amazon doesn't have the product yet...)

I ordered a 1 GB iPod shuffle for myself along with a 20" iMac G5 for my wife a month ago. She teaches at a local university, I'm a federal government employee. No iPod discounts available....$149 + tax. A month later, the iPod shuffle just shipped after a month-long backorder and should arrive at my doorstep on Tuesday. It's education price is now $139 and a 4 GB iPod mini is $179. For $30 more than what I paid for the shuffle, I can get 4x the storage space, longer battery life, the full iPod interface, my choice of color, and custom engraving.

The shuffle will be returned the day it arrives.
