DV Dailies - Ireland First Country to Convert to All-Digital Theaters

by , 12:00 PM EST, March 29th, 2005

The Register UK has reported that Ireland will be the first country to convert all theaters to the digital format from standard 35mm projection. Digital Cinema Limited and Avica Europe chose Ireland as the test pilot country based on the criteria of being an English speaking country where 80% of the films shown are Hollywood features in 105 venues and has the second highest level of cinema attendance in Europe. Films will be downloaded via satellite to the theaters in a digital format using Avica technology reducing turnaround time for smaller venues and theoretically, the cost will reduce as well over time.

Subject: Digital right now is just hype

I still prefer analog movies over digital. When you can see pixelation on the big screen, it's not time to switch over.

There was an article in Wired recently about digital cinema, and Mark Cuban's role in it. It sounds like a promising technology.

Subject: Digital beats 35mm now.

I still prefer analog movies over digital. When you can see pixelation on the big screen, it's not time to switch over.

The theater near my house has a digital projector, and I find it's pictures to be awesome. It's sharpness is second only to Imax, and is more solid and grain free then anything else I've ever seen. The focus has always been flawless across the entire screen. The only way you can see pixels is if you sit in the first few rows, and film from there looks even worse. (The pixels are smaller then film grain.)

Curiously, I've noticed that the 35 mm projections in this theatre are also far superior to 35 mm in other theaters nearby. 35 mm at this theater is almost as good as digital, while 35mm at some other theaters looks far worse.

Seen in digital:

Final Fantasy (Different theater)
SW: Attack of the clones (Seen both 35mm and digital)
Daredevil
Master and Commander
The Incredibles
and one or two more I'm forgetting.
