HP Gives PCs a Silver Make-Over, Built-in iPod Dock
by , 5:15 PM EST, March 30th, 2005
While some have speculated whether the Mac mini was originally designed to feature a built-in iPod dock, HP has taken the initiative and packed such a feature on top of its new Media Center m7000 PhotoSmart PC.
The new m7000 PhotoSmart PC is part of a redesigned line of PCs from HP that the company has designed to fit better into other parts of the house, featuring sleek silver and white cases.
"We got a very warm reception for this," Tom Anderson, VP of marketing, global consumer PCs, told CNET. "We didn't do it because Apple did it. We did it because our customers told us that they liked it."
HP said silver-colored accessories and displays will be available to match HP's new look, and over time, HP Pavilion notebooks and printers will also adopt silver cases.

Here's the manual for the Media Center computer:

I THINK that's an older model. It doesn't have a built-in iPod dock, BUT it does show you how to build your own dock into the case on page 61.
If you take a look at that, I imagine that's a lot what the new one looks like, only it comes built in instead of you doing it yourself.
That HP was unhappy with the deal to re-sell HP branded iPods. If they're integrating a dock into their actual cases now, they plan on selling iPods for a long time. I wonder if there's an insert or what they used to adapt it from a iPod to a mini, since they form factor of each model is slightly different even though the connector is the same.

If it's anything like hp's XP Media Center PCs, there will be a dock recessed into the top panel, which has a sliding cover for when not in use. Just an educated guess.
I am a die hard PC user, but every time I see crap like this I just want to hang my head in shame. First of all, the thing looks cheap in the pictures, like something from one of those unknown Chinese pc companies. This thing just reeks of painted plastic. I have no problem with high quality plastics mind you but it really looks tacky and cheap when the stuff is painted. Why can't these guys hire someone to come up with a decent design and improve build quality like OQO and Motion Computing have managed to do? Secondly didn't someone manage to tell HP that "silver" colored items are on there way out? I have about had it with the "metal look" that every thing is taking on these days. Everything from toaster to cell phones to computer mice. Enough already sheesh. ![]()
