Apple Hosts Exclusive Trailer for Joss Whedon's "Serenity"
by , 7:35 PM EDT, April 26th, 2005
Apple Computer has posted an exclusive trailer for the film Serenity, Joss Whedon's big screen adaptation of his TV show Firefly. Fox canceled Firefly in 2004, though the show was highly praised by critics and fans alike. Since that time, Serenity has become a highly-anticipated movie.
Serenity, the first film from the franchise, picks up where the TV show ended, pitting the crew of the space ship Serenity against the Alliance over the fate of River. In Serenity, however, we learn more of the backstory on what the Alliance did to her, as well as seeing more of what she is capable of doing.
The trailer being hosted by Apple is an exclusive. Joss Whedon has long been known for his cooperation with Apple in using Macs on-screen in his TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, as well as his screenwriting work with Steve Jobs' other company, Pixar, where he punched up scripts for the Toy Story franchise and other films.
If you are interested in learning more about Firefly before you see Serenity, you can buy the full 13 episode DVD set that includes episodes never broadcast by Fox (US$34.99 - Amazon).
Serenity will be released in theaters September 30th. You can learn more about the movie at the Serenity Web site.

Wait, now failed TV shows can become major motion pictures? WTF? That series had maybe two good episodes. The rest blew chunks. Very very boring. I thought it hilarious when, near the end, Fox showed some Brady Bunch special in lieu of Firefly. How embarrassing.
Good thing for Joss, there's wonderful economic inventions like cross-border leasing to fund crap like this.
'Firefly' took television sci-fi to a higher level of character and plot development... and it just kicked serious A.
Too bad the idiots at Fox decided to screw around with the show schedule (What genius decided to air the two-part pilot in the middle of the season anyway?) and made other bad decisions that lead to the show's cancellation. Fans have made the Firefly series DVD a hot seller (you MUST rent this) and Universal noticed, got the movie rights, and now we have 'Serenity' (which is the name of the ship). Check out this excellent trailer...

Anonymous, you obsiously don't know good TV when you see it. Maybe, just maybe, like the Family Guy, FoX will see the error of their ways and bring it back.
I won't hold my breath, though.

Honestly, if you thought there were even two good episodes, buy the DVDs and watch it start to finish as it was intended. I think you will change your opinion.

This show, while I am ashamed to say I spurned while on the air (tried it but kept coming in while they were eating dinner) rocked!
Borrowed DVD set from my sis and watched all the way through twice!!!
BRING THOSE CRAZY F*CKERS (that's fockers) ON!

absolutely. What they did to the series on Faux was excrable. The DVDs, what with the 3 unaired eps, do wonders for making the show shine.

I'm actually willing to consider this. All I remember is being bored out of my mind when watching most of the episodes. I didn't know they were showing them out of order though and it likely contributed to the lost feeling that kept me from connecting. I thought it had some interesting ideas but I just couldn't get into it. I wanted to know more about the priest but I thought the whore was put in for some kind of shock value. Overall, I thought it was starting out with too many characters. It was readily apparent that they couldn't handle all of them in any substantive way. It's like the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none."
allanimal, you might be right. I think Family Guy sucks big time. About the only TV I watch these days is Stargate SG-1 and now that Rick is leaving the cast, I'm not very inclined to continue watching.
Oh, and Fox is bringing back Family Guy.

Firefly is one of the best examples of SciFi, good story telling, great character building, and just plain fun available anywhere.
By far, my favorite episode is "Out of Gas", but every episode has something worth watching.
If you don't 'get' Firefly, that's OK, not everybody will. For those of us who do enjoy the adventures of Mal and his crew, this movie trailer is like foreplay to a 30 year old virgin on Viagra. (Um, not speaking from experience, mind you.)
Bring it on!

Agree in all regards.
I saw the series when it aired on Fox, but lost interest in it for some reason. I picked up the DVD set and started watching, and quickly realized that Firefly is a truly excellent show. Out of Gas is definitely a beautiful bit of storywriting on Tim Minear's part (incidentally, Minear was co-creator of Wonderfalls, another clever show Fox canned early in its season).
I attribute my loss of interest in the show while it aired to Fox's deplorable decision to air an inherently serialized show out of order. They moved the pilot episode to mid-season, of all things! No wonder people had trouble connecting with the characters - the audience got dropped into the show headfirst with no real 'beginning'. With the episodes in order, the show really does shine.
I saw the trailer last night before The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I know I broke into a big smile. I have high hopes for the movie - maybe it'll convince Fox to take the show out of the on-air dustbin and re-air it again.
If you saw the show and were equivocal about it (as I was), buy the DVDs (or borrow them from a friend if you don't want to spend the money) and watch the season the way it was meant to be. If you hated it from the outset, it might change your mind, and if you thought the show had potential on-air that was squandered, you'll probably love it.
Oh, and the show has some excellent quotables. I don't really want to post any because I don't want to give anything away about the season, but trust me - there's some great stuff in there.
