Apple Drops Price of 20" and 23" Cinema Displays

by , 9:10 AM EDT, April 27th, 2005

Apple Computer dropped the price for its 20" and 23" Cinema Displays Wednesday. The company lowered the price of the 20" Cinema Display by US$200 to $799, and the 23" Cinema Display HD by $300 to $1,499. The 30" model will remain priced at $2,999, and all three units maintain the same features and specs as before.

In comparison, Dell offers a 20.1" wide-aspect LCD display with a list price of $749, and a discounted price of $486.85. Gateway doesn't currently offer a Gateway-branded 20" display, but does have on its Web site units from other companies starting at $704.95 at the same resolution as Apple's unit.

You can find more information on the Cinema Display product line at Apple's Web site, and pricing at the Apple Store.

Apple also announced Wednesday a bump in its Power Mac G5 product line.

Subject: Where's the $199 15"

At Besy Buy the other day, I was checking out the Mac mini.Besy Buy had a package deal where if you bought the $499 mini, you got a 15" monitor and keyboard/mouse for $649 total - that's $150 for a 15" LCD and cheepo input devices. Now sure it isn't Apple quality but it was fine for email/web surfing.

Why isn't Apple offering a $200 - $300 15"? Who is going to pay $499 for a mini and then drop nearly twice that on the monitor and keyboard/mouse?

How about people who already have a monitor keyboard and mouse, as in Windows users who have a PC Box that has been cripped by spyware, viruses and the garbage 11.99 piece of software they bought at the gas station.

That's who the target market for the Mini is in case you havent figured it out by now.

No need for apple to sell cheap products. There's a bunch of other companies to do that. Apple has style and quality and that's what they're focussing on, not competing for cut-throat cheap quality sales.

That 15" LCD monitor won't be very good for that price.

Just like my 19" CRT (Mitsubishi Diamondtron) for $400 was much better than the 19" CRT at $200 when I bought it two years ago. My eyes thank me.

I actually agree that a cheapo 15 or 17" Apple LCD couldn't hurt. Even if it was spec'd to the quality of the iMac monitors (they aren't quite as high quality correct?)

Heck I'd potentially buy a 17" as a second monitor if I had the new version of Apple LCD. Alas, I have the 20" ADC and ain't no way I'm paying $900 CDN for a 17" ADC... especially not now!

Margins, baby, margins. Apple has removed itself from all no-margin commodity markets with the possible exception of the flash music player market. Apple does not want to spin its wheels producing thousands of units for which there is no profit. It is literally a waste of time.

Why can't Apple have a high-quality 17" display (at maybe $400-$500), instead of a crappy $150 one? It is absurd that Apple doesn't sell a monitor for less than $800. There are plenty of people who are willing to shell out the money for a Power Mac, but are not going to lay down another $800 for a display, even if they wish they could get an Apple monitor. Then they go home or to the office, stick the Mac under the desk, and as far as anyone else is concerned they're using a Sony computer (or whatever brand monitor was used). A monitor with an Apple logo is a great advertising/mindshare opportunity.

Perhaps they can sell little Apple stickers to put on your monitor?

I don't think it's a big deal. Anyone who sees the actual screen can tell they're not looking at Windows. This is just like the 2-button mice. I don't care that Apple doesn't make one because I can get a great mouse from Logitech. There's no reason for Apple to try and compete in a market where they'll probably lose anyway.

My Mac is under my desk and I use a CRT monitor with a logitech mouse. Trust me, it's still clearly a Mac, even from across the room.

Oooh, even though $799 is still a lot, $200 is a big discount

Having purchased a card to accommodate a 30 inch and waiting for a price drop on the 30, I am very disappointed. The price drops should have been across the board.
