Now Stumbles on Now Up-to-Date's Tiger Compatibility

MacCentral's Peter Cohen reported on Wednesday that Now Software, unlike many other developers, won't have a Tiger-compatible version of Now Up-to-Date & Contact ready when the new Mac OS ships on April 29. The calendaring and contact management application is currently at version 4.5.3. Version 5.0 will introduce Tiger support, but it won't ship until June and it will be a paid upgrade.
According to Mr. Cohen, news of a paid upgrade has upset some Now Software customers, but he talked to Now Software's Director of Marketing Randy Murray, who said that Tiger support "is the smallest new feature in the product." Mr. Murray told Mr. Cohen that version 5.0 will also feature team scheduling capabilities, a Now Server Manager utility that simplifies the setup of servers for group use and more.
After the release of Now Up-to-Date & Contact 5.0, Mr. Cohen wrote that Now Software expects "to add more Tiger-specific support, exposing features like Widgets designed to make use of Tiger's new Dashboard technology, services designed to support Spotlight ... and more."
Mr. Cohen said that Now Up-to-Date & Contact 5.0 will cost US$49.95 for owners of version 4.5, with the full software selling for $129.95 on CD or $119.95 as a download. However, anyone who purchased the software after March 28 will receive the new version for free.

Maybe you should try wandering outside your fantasy world once and awhile, because the article doesn't say one word about compatibility problems with Tiger. It says Now Software won't have a product ready in time for Tiger's release date.
Compatibility problems? Bugs? Not mentioned in the article. That's what happens when you let your delusions overlap with reality.

Compatibility problems? Bugs? Lots of them! That's what happens when you open your wallet and buy Tiger without making an intelligent judgment.
Compatiblity issues are not anyones "fault". That's the nature of software evolution. "You" want things to be better, faster, more powerful, etc.; that means that things have to change, technology changes. Solutions that are appropriate at one moment may not be so for another. Orchestrating the implementation of technology change, in this case software structure, is not easy nor is (or every will be) painless; it just has to be done or you may as well stand still. Software design is an incredibly complex task, requiring programers to anticipate every possible contingency, and even having done that, they are still suprised when some programmer somewhere does something totally unexpected, causing the appearance of a "bug". No release is ever perfect; some are very good right out of the box, but never perfect; if you are fixated on finding fault and laying blame, I suspect you are frequently dissapointed with much in life. Tiger with have growing pains, and true to form most of the fixes for most of the problems will be posted within scant days of being reported. Few software companies can match Apple on the bug fix front. Bugs are a fact of life; there are too many people out there coding, at different levels and they are all human, making mistakes like everyone else, but for the most part they are not the end of the world; report the bug, let them fix it, and move on.

That's a nice tongue-twister and all, but it doesn't make a lick of sense. What the hell were you trying to say? Have you suffered head trauma? Are you okay?

Microsoft's bugs are a hundred times more numerous than Apple's, and a hundred times more liable to hang programs, corrupt drivers, trash the operating system, and open security holes. But hey, if it makes you comfortable to live in a fantasy world where people like Macs for reasons other than the fact that they just work, knock yourself out. Just remember that more and more normal computer users, the kind who don't worship at Bill Gates' feet, are wising up and switching from Windows. So prepare for shrinking company.

Be careful not to read into Now's statement more than they are saying. If they say that their software SUPPORTS Tiger, that means that it enables Tiger's features within the program. They did NOT say that the software would not RUN under Tiger. The first sentence of the article is thus probably wrong in a strict sense.
For example, Spotlight is one of the major new features in Tiger, but it will NOT search files that are written by software that's not been written to allow Tiger to index the files. (Sorry for the mouthful.) They can't say that it SUPPORTS Tiger until it enables Spotlight (and the other Tiger features).
As for "compatibility," it's not Apple's task to make the OS "compatible" with every application--that's the application software developer's job. Developers have had Tiger to work with for quite a while--check how many are releasing new versions this week or next. It looks like Now wants to wait until it releases its next major upgrade before adding Tiger SUPPORT.
I am very disappointed with Now. They have promised an advanced version of NUDC for two years. And, they even miss the Tiger launch. Granted, I only use it in single user mode, but what I saw and Macworld and on the web looks almost unchanged (Now Contact - I've moved to iCal for my calendar needs). Pity, it is pretty good software.... looking forward to the update, but may be looking elsewhere for my contact needs.
