Apple Announces Apple Store Tiger Festivities for Friday

by , 8:55 AM EDT, April 28th, 2005

In case you've been under a rock for the last few weeks, Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" will be released Friday, April 29th, 2005. Apple Computer announced Thursday the traditional Apple Store (and VAR) festivities for such a release, beginning tomorrow at 6:00 PM. Tiger goes on sale at that time, and the company will be hosting "Tiger World Premiere" events from 6:00 PM to midnight. These events will include workshops and hands-on demonstrations of Tiger's features, plus giveaways at every store, and a chance to win a PowerBook G4, iPod, and more.

For an Apple Store near you, visit Apple's retail Web site. For an Apple-authorized VAR, check your local Yellow Pages.

Like all of the point updates for Mac OS X, Tiger will be priced at US$129, with a Family Pack of 5-licenses available for $199.

The Server version of Tiger will be priced at $499 for a 10-client version, and $999 for an unlimited-client version.

Apple is offering free upgrades to Tiger (with a shipping and handling fee of $9.95) for customers who purchased a new Mac on or after April 12, 2005. You can find details on that program at Apple's Up-to-Date Web page.

You can also order Tiger from the Apple Store, and Amazon is offering it for $94.88.

I went to the Panther launch, at the Costa Mesa, CA store, and it was a madhouse. There was a line out the door, that ran at least 100 feet. Then, again, I think I will just wait until lunch time, on Saturday, and go pick up my copy. Then the store will just be packed, and no longer completely overrun. I just hope they still have a copy left, for me.

I plan on attending the event at the Fashion Valley Store.

Ahh, Fashion Valley. I used to work at the YMCA just around the corner from there. That was quite a few years ago. I now live in South Carolina, what a difference. I love the South, but I do miss SD.

Luckily the launch of Panther didn't cause great turmoil in the SD store so as to call it a "madhouse", and hopefully this time will not be the exception.
If this is the case this time around, I won't mind staying there till midnight... even though right afterwards we'll be driving to Coachella for the wknd.

Does anyone know if I can purchase Tiger at the education discount in-store?

I'm assuming no, but I can dream right?

I'll be downtown in Chicago this afternoon, so I'll make sure to get a look at what the N. Mich. Ave. store has in store for people tomorrow at 6. I mean, what better timing? Everyone that worked on Friday can just stay downtown: leave work, have a nice dinner, then cram into the Apple Store!

Yeah, I've purchased stuff with the education discount at the apple store in king of prussia, PA. You have to have a drives license and valid school id.
On a serparate note, does anyone know if they will be doing the 10% off discount like they did for the night of Panther?

I tried to buy an educational version of some software once at my local Apple Store and they said they don't offer educational versions of software in stores. You can still get educational discounts on hardware in stores, though.

I purchased Panther at educational discount during night of Panther. There was no difference in the packaging for it, they just sold it at a discounted price. I would give your local Apple store a call and find out what they say.

...

turns out they didn't have too much set up that I could see beyond little stacks of single-page pamphlets advertising the release of Tiger on most of the display tables.

what I did see of interest though, was some lady spill her Starbucks all over a Shuffle ... god rest its soul

Subject: Not Available in Stores?

I was told by the 1-800 Apple Store (direct) people that Tiger will not be available in most of the stores and all you'll get is a coupon for later pick up. Lots of angry people I said. So I ordered and mine is at the FedEx station couple of blocks away. So . . .

But if this is not true and just a sales ploy, oh well. At least I'll have it an hour and a half, at least, earlier and won't have to wait inline in the snow and cold even though there is a Starbucks right there. Shipping was free and to drive there, creative coffee drink, stand in line, endure the weather, endure Apple Store people, and having it hand much later, it's just not worth it.

Subject: Scratch off ticket

Just returned from the Apple Store. Give away was a scratch off card that gave you chances for a PowerBook, iPod Shuffle, 10% off, or an iTunes song. Our cards were both songs, but saw at least one person with the 10% off card.
