Apple Releases QuickTime 7 for Panther

by , 11:30 AM EDT, April 29th, 2005

Apple Computer has released QuickTime 7 for Panther users. QuickTime 7 is a component of Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," which is being released today, but the company has made a standalone update for Mac OS X 10.3 users that brings all of the new features to Panther. QuickTime 7 Pro will require a new key, which is priced at US$29.99.

Apple's release notes:

QuickTime 7 provides a vast array of new features, including:

  • H.264 video support
  • Live player resize
  • Zero-configuration streaming
  • Surround sound
  • New and improved playback controls
  • All-new content guide

Additionally, QuickTime 7 Pro users will enjoy the following new capabilities:

  • Audio and video recording
  • Simplified movie sharing
  • Full-screen floating controls
  • H.264 video creation
  • Surround audio creation
  • Concurrent exports
  • Improved movie authoring
  • AAC constant-quality encoding
  • 3G streaming content creation

Apple stressed in the release notes that installation of QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key, which can be purchased at Apple's QuickTime site, to regain QuickTime Pro functionality.

You can find more information on QuickTime 7 at Apple's Web site.

Blast! I love QT Pro. Love it to death. And I'm a Panther user. I just upgraded to QT 7. Now I have to buy a new key to get my Pro functionality back?!

OK, I admit, the fault is mine. I should have read the release notes more carefully. But honestly, I usually just upgrade anything that Apple tells me to install without reading too carefully. Trusting Apple is my reflex response. ESPECIALLY when the upgrade checkbox is clicked as the default option.

So anyhow, I'm a bit miffed. Does anyone know if it's possible to delete QT 7, and go back to QT 6?

I'm assuming it's POSSIBLE, I'm just not sure where you'd get QT 6 now. I always got it online. I'd guess it's somwhere on your OS X CD, but I'm not sure how to go about getting it off of there. You could certainly try to mess around with it.

Before you go to too much trouble, though, tell me if you're going to get Tiger soon or not. Because if you are, it will ALSO come with QT 7. You're gonna have to pay the $30 to get 7-Pro eventually, you might as well do it now.

I'm holding off on this upgrade until I find out what it does to Final Cut Pro, but if I didn't have Final Cut I would have simply bought the upgrade Pro by now myself.

Subject: Feature List for QuickTime 7

This should answer your question about the difference between the Panther and Tiger version (Spotlight and Automator, for example).

What's new in Quicktime Player
Both the free QuickTime Player and QuickTime Pro provide a host of new features. New in QuickTime Player:

H.264 video support
This state-of-the-art, standards-based codec delivers exceptional-quality video at the lowest data rate possible, across data rates ranging from 3G to HD and beyond.

Live resize
Playback continues smoothly as you change the size of the QuickTime Player window.

Zero-configuration streaming
You no longer need to set your Internet connection speed in QuickTime Preferences. QuickTime automatically determines the best connection speed for your computer. If a connection is lost during streaming, QuickTime automatically reconnects to the server.

Surround sound
QuickTime Player can now play up to 24 channels of audio. With QuickTime 7, your Mac, and surround speakers, you can enjoy the full effect of your surround sound movie or game.

New and improved playback controls
Use the new A/V Controls window to adjust settings for the best viewing experience. Easily change settings including jog shuttle, playback speed, bass, treble, and balance.

Spotlight-friendly media
New in Mac OS X v10.4, Spotlight makes it easy to find your QuickTime content. Spotlight can search for movie attributes such as artist, copyright, codec, and so on.

Screen reader compatibility
Using VoiceOver, included with Mac OS X v10.4, visually impaired users can enjoy QuickTime Player features.

All-new content guide
The all-new QuickTime Content Guide provides the latest in entertainment on the Internet.

Easy access to QuickTime Pro
When you use the free QuickTime Player, features available only in QuickTime Pro display a “Pro” by their names. If you choose one of these items, you’ll see a definition of the feature and learn how to upgrade to QuickTime Pro.

QuickTime 7 Pro users enjoy not only all the great features in QuickTime Player, but also the following new QuickTime Pro capabilities:

Record audio and video
With a digital video camera connected to your computer, you can quickly create vido postcards to share with family and friends.

Share movies
Easily create a movie file for sending via email or posting to a website.

Floating controls
Full-screen mode now provides floating DVD-like controls for easy access to functions like pause, play, fast-forward, and rewind. Move your mouse and the full-screen controller appears on the screen for several seconds.

Create H.264 video
Use this codec for all your video encoding needs. Create content ranging in size from HD (high definition) to 3G (for mobile devices), and everything in between.

Create surround audio
Create a rich multimedia experience for your customers by adding multi-channel audio to your movie. If some of your customers don’t have surround speakers, don’t worry; QuickTime automatically mixes the audio to work with the speaker setup of each user.

Concurrent exports
Export multiple files at once—and continue with your next playback or editing task.

Improved movie authoring
Editing tasks are much easier with new hot keys for in and out points. In addition, the Movie Properties interface has been completely redesigned to facilitate simple and efficient movie authoring.

New AAC constant-quality mode
Create AAC audio files optimized for constant quality rather than a constant bit rate for a consistently high-quality listening experience.

3G streaming
Create 3G files for RTSP streaming that are fully interoperable with other 3G streaming handsets and delivery architectures.

Automator-compliant
With Mac OS X v10.4, employ the easy-to-use interface of Automator for streamlining your QuickTime workflow. QuickTime 7 Pro users have exclusive access to a set of QuickTime-based Automator actions for easily automating such tasks as starting and stopping captures, hinting movies, enabling tracks, and more. The combination of Automator and QuickTime 7 Pro also lets you create your own set of personalized QuickTime-based Automator actions.

Thanks to everyone who pointed me toward the Quicktime 6 reinstaller. I've only had Pro for a few months, so I didn't realize that every major upgrade required a new key. I'll be on the lookout next time.

I installed QT 7 at work on an iMac G4 1.25 GHz, 512 RAM with OS 10.3.9, and upon restart I saw the QT startup script thing running in the dock, and the arrow under the QT icon showing that it, too, was supposedly running.

The problem was, nothing was running. After a while the AppleScript thing tells me it timed out. I click okay, look at the QT icon, and nothing's going on there, so I force quit and reinstall QT 6.5.2.

I then installed QT 7 via Software Updates in the Apple menu, but the exact same thing happened. What's going on?

On every site I have been to I see nothing but complaints that QT7 does not work on Panther. Even worse, many users can't ge iTunes working now. I would not update to QT7 if I were you.

I have installed QT7 on 2 machines, both running 10.3.9 without problems.

It's pretty cool I must say. Go to Apples QT site and download the QT HD trailers. The video on my 20 inch screen is amazing, it now scales all the way out to full screen. Try the NASA video of the space station.

Subject: QuickProblem

I have spent most of the last 20 hours trying to solve this problem.. back and forth between 7.0 and 6.5.2; trashing caches, preference files; running OnyX; repairing properties; repairing disk..

With much file moving and restarting, I think I narrowed it down to file that seems to cause the problem for QT 7.0: ~System/Library/Quicktime/QuickTimeComponents.component, though this may be the component that enables the other components, so the problem may yet be one of the other components.

After searching the Apple Support QuickTime discussion boards and trying everything else, it seems the only option is to either do an archived reinstall of OS X or wait for Apple to fix the problem and release another update (and who knows when that will be?).

So, do I upgrade to Tiger and suffer the inability to use some apps (like ProTools LE), or do I stay where I am and suffer the loss of all apps that use QuickTime, or do I forfeit a day reinstalling the OS and all my apps? Sounds like a lose-lose-lose. It's too bad I have to re-learn this lesson every time I for a moment trust an Apple first-round update.

I reinstalled QT 6.5.2, via the reinstaller, and the older simple install. Neither worked right. iTunes is still broken; won't even open. I also reinstalled 10.3.9 somewhere in there, too. Nothing. This is really lame, Apple.

I had the same issue with installing 7.0. The reinstaller does reinstall QT 6.5.2... but doesn't fix whatever the QT 7.0 install did to iTunes, etc (also affected Pro Tools and a couple other audio/music apps on my system). The fix: I had to reinstall iTunes and the system software from the DVD-ROMs that came with my G5 iMac. Then do all the upgrading... less QT 7.0 again. After a day of headaches, I didn't feel like going through the Pro Tools reinstall quite yet... so it's still not working.

Same thing here: installed QT7 and now iTunes won't start. Tried to downgrade to QT 6.5.2 this morning but it still won't work. I also de-authorized my copy, but that didn't make it either.

If you happen to have Digidesign apps, you will have to delete them. I have Digidesign 001 with Protools LE. When I visited here http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@967.g9C1aOmcQa0.1@.68addf52/37
I read the following "It didn't even occur to me that the Digidesign CoreAudio software was the source of my iTunes getting "hung" (in the Activity Monitor).", I just deleted the Digidesign folder in my apps folder. Reopened iTunes and there you go fixed.

Now I do not know how to fix the Digidesign thing, but at least my iTunes works.

you have to reinstall everything to get itunes back? .......... that blows

For pro tools user's: Zap your "Pram" (hold down "option" "apple" "P" and "R" on resart ) and "verify/Repair permissions (Disk Utility) and PT will come back.

I'm having the same itunes/QT 7 problem as above, i was able to reinstall QT 6 and i have no prob's with Pro tools.... but i cant listen to MY TUNES!!!!!
i can find any more info on this, even apple wont talk about it.
anyone found anything post it.

IM NOT HAPPY WITH APPLE RIGHT NOW

Q: if this problem can't be solved by apple sending out an update for ether QT or itunes, could they then come over to my house and reinstall my computer (to my liking and specific requirement's ) while I'm at work? this little oversight made me look read dumb to a client.

ok. so do i, in brazil. after updating QT7, iTunes does not go with PRO TOOLS - if i uninstall PRO TOOL, i goes, if i reinstall PRO TOOLS, it does not even open! The same problem happens with the FINAL CUT: the FC doesn't runs. And that came all after this messmaker QT7.

Subject: quicktime 7 real media export problem

If you upgrade to quicktime 7, and try to export to real media format rm, the sound will be just a split second out of sync whether you export it from quicktime itself or final cut hd or whatever. The only way to solve the problem is to reinstall 6.5.2 over 7 and then the problem goes away and you can export to real media format fine again with 1-pass very high, high or medium encoding.

This was a nightmare to figure out as my shop depends on editing in final cut and exporting in rm.

You should use Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to open the QT 6.5.2 .pkg and choose to install.

When asked to update or overwrite, you should choose overwrite to ensure the complete reinstallation of QT.
Apple's instalelr would not overwrite files correctly

The Solution from "Mac-Man" works.
And install the new CoreAudio from Digidesign and Itunes works.
Quicktime however, in standard mode, you can't get into the registration to go to the "Pro" mode, it won't open anymore.
I'll wait for the solution, and the appologies from Apple.
The system X, Apple claims to be "fool" proof, this is really........

We'll see.

OK, unplug the MBox Then it works! Yeah, OK here's the problem:
1. ProTools has a plan to get rid of Apple.
2. Apple isn't going to die, if we have anything to do with it!
3. MBox/PT sucks with all that "propritary hardware" crap.
Unplug the crap and move to Logic. It's better for the money.

G5 with 10.3.9. After installing QT7, I upgraded to Pro, and since then Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 doesn't recognize several of my firewire DV video devices (Panasonic AG DVX100 or Sony DVCAM deck). The System Profile sees them but Final Cut doesn't. (and other quicktime apps like Boinx iStopMotion, or even the Quicktime Player capture mode)

Reinstalling QT 6.5.2 (it keeps my Pro license, fortunately) has solved the problem.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'd like to install QT7. The HD trailers look great!

Subject: DON'T RE-INSTALL EVERYTHING !!!

You may save piles of time if you try this first:

Open your Digidesign Core Audio Driver and remove Quicktime or iTunes, whichever is the offending program. If you don't need the sound to come from your Digidesign hardware you can just pull the programs from the list and move on with your life.

All my sound comes from MOTU hardware, so instead of re-installing everything I spent 1 minute. Do it if you can. If you need the sound coming out of DIGI hardware I can't help...

I then tried to download I-tunes 4.9 and neither application is working. No I believe they are doing just that. I made the mistake of updating and now I have a crippled version of QT that promts me to buy PRO when I staretup. It even overwrote the PRO I had, and I'm not sure where the PRO I had came from. It might be in one of the many budled installs I did. This is an evil move on their part.

Okay, I upgraded my mac g4 to os 10.3.9 and upgraded qt to 7 and upgraded itunes. Neither qt or itunes will open. So last night I stumble across a strange fix. I installed qt again. Now on my hard drive there is Quicktime and Quicktime 2. So here's the trick. Click on the one called Quicktime. As soon as the pinwheel pops up click on itunes and it opens. Also do the same thing but open Quicktime 2 and it opens. But you have to first force quit qt from the dock. This is the strangest thing I'v ever seen.
