TMO Reports - iTunes Phone Not Announced; Coming in Next "66 Days" (UPDATE)

by , 1:00 AM EDT, July 26th, 2005

A much anticipated Motorola mobile phone with the ability to play music from Apple's iTunes music service was not announced at a planned press event Monday, but instead will debut at an exclusive showing sometime in the next 66 days, a Motorola executive said.

Before a packed crowd of reporters, Motorola CEO Ed Zander began the event by announcing, "We're not going to launch the iTunes phone today."

Mr. Zander then read a prepared statement explaining when the phone would debut, but giving little reason for the continuing delay of a mobile product that has been talked about for a year.

"(Apple CEO) Steve Jobs is not going to jump out of a cake (today)," Mr. Zander quipped. "And we're not going to launch it tomorrow. But on one of the 66 days left in the quarter -- we're not saying which one yet -- Apple, Motorola and our biggest operator partners around the world will announce and ship the first iTunes phone."

Mr. Zander went on to say that the iTunes-ready cellular phone will be "the best music phone in the business" and "will ship before our competitors."

The Motorola exec acknowledged that music on mobile phones, "will be the next big experience, the next big thing" and said the announcement of the first phone with iTunes capability was so big "it deserves an event of its own."

After countless rumors and what has appeared over the past seven months to be delays in its announcement, Mr. Zander guaranteed that the iTunes-ready phone is not a ghost. "It's real and it's happening," he said. "Stayed tuned for iTunes."

Zander ended the statement by saying, "I don't want to hear any more about (the iTunes phone) for the next day or so."

Motorola strikes at Blackberry with "Q"

What Motorola did unveil Monday was a ultra thin mobile phone (see photo below) that includes a keyboard, taking direct aim at Research in Motion, Ltd. and its Blackberry, an all-in-one, handheld, e-mail and mobile phone device, as well as Palm Inc. and its handheld Treo devices.

The Q is Motorola's answer to competing product such as the Blackberry and Treo.

The "Q" is based on the ultra-thin design of its popular Razr phone and includes a 320 x 240 pixel, high-resolution color display and a 1.3 mega pixel digital camera. The phone is about 50% thinner than its competitors, Motorola said, and runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0. It is optimized for Microsoft Exchange 2003 and a variety of third party email solutions, the company said.

Right so instead of an iTunes phone from a supposed Apple 'partner' we get Moto's idea of what the phone will become, and its run by a windows operating system.

Now call me paranoid but isn't there a potential nightmare scenario forming here? Go down the line 5 years or so from now. Moto have refocused and re energised their phone devision at least in part due to the success and cool factor of the iTunes phone. But hey ho by then the top end (if not more) of this phone market are devices like the one launched here. Having used its new 'image' to take a substantial share of the market Moto does one of 2 things. It incorporates the iTunes phone as part of this Windows phone range in which case every such phone sold (on the back of iTunes or not) is actually a Windows phone, or worse still, from a new position of strength Moto simply says that from now on its music phones will be integrated WMA phones with iTunes support gradually being dropped over time (you know rather what Apple are doing with them and IBM on the chip font right now).

I have always thought that one of the reasons that Apple have been reluctant to forge too strong and inclusive a partnership with others in the iPodiverse was to prevent such a potential development taking place after such a partner had rode on the iPod/iTunes coat tails. How I wonder is this potential hazzard to be avoided here? Lets hope that Nokia and others soon get to develop their own versions of iTunes phones shall we otherwise products like this will strike at both Apple's computer and iPod devisons at the same time- a sort of reverse halo effect.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Apple could be (and probably is) using Moto just as much.

Although, they may have really hyped this event, having no intention of unveiling the iTunes phone, just to get extra press for their Blackberry. So, yeah - they may be using Apple's cred a bit here. I mean, would TMO have run a photo of this gadget otherwise? No. (BTW-Their Blackberry looks nice, but I'm not buying one.)

This must be driving Jobs crazy. He's probably pacing in his office, muttering "I *kneW* these guys were gonna #$%^& this up! Can't trust ANYONE!"

I was looking forwad to some REAL info on the Moto phone with iTunes support. I AM a windows Mobile user though and I must say that the Q looks very promising. MS does a much better job with their phone OS than their PC OS (though admittedly memory management has sucked in all previous iterations and you DO occasionally get a phone freeze). Moto does a better job with their pro phones than the general Schlock they release as well. I may be in line for this phone...now if only Apple would release a mobile version of iTunes for Smartphones!

Let's not stop at iTunes, what about a purpose built Mac phone - integration with either Address Book/iCal/Mail OR Entourage, without using 3rd party scripts/conduits/apps.

Maybe Apple is using Moto to learn about phones, so that Apple can move into that space?

Subject: will the iTunes phone have Apple software?

Dear Gang,

I just had my cell phone poop out on me. I've actually been thinking about replacing it for some time now, but haven't as there are no phones which really sync well using iSync with Apple's Address Book and iCal. I've been interested in the "iTunes phone" not because of it's iPod-like qualities, but because I'm praying that Apple / Motorola will allow it to sync seemlessly with iSync so that my categories from both the Address Book and iCal are reflected in the phone's database. In other words, I want an Apple software based smartphone.

Do you guys think this is likely possibility or am I fooling myself? Everything I've read about this "iTunes phone" leads me to believe that it'll simply play mp4's - I've never seen it mentioned that other Apple software would be included nor have I seen anything to indicate improved iSynching compatibility.

Mark, you may be in luck. I have read that the phone wil use iTunes to sync music AND contact information from your Address Bookin the same way iTunes does with your iPod. Unfortunately, MY rumor is not worth much, but no less than any other rumor you might read elsewhere online. For what it is worth, I have had a VERY good experience with PocketMac Phone edition to sync my MS Smartphone to my Mac. It's worth the $25.00.
