Apple-Financed School Deal Premature, Report Says

School chiefs in Detroit, Mich. now say a plan for Apple Computer to finance a high-tech school, for the underprivileged is not complete and an announcement is not expected for some time.

After initially reporting Monday that a deal would be announced Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press reports Wednesday that a deal has still not been finalized, and local governor Jennifer Granholm apparently "got ahead of the deal" when she revealed it last week.

To date, the contract is not complete, no money has changed hands and the school is not expected to be operating this fall, said Lekan Oguntoyinbo, spokesman for the district. The district and the governor's office gave no indication when a deal might be completed. As is usual, Apple refuses to make any comment.

The school district expects to transform the new location of Crockett High into a technology-based school over the course of the school year with grant money that will be spent on Apple products, school officials said. Apple staff will train teachers and students at no cost.
