Apple 'Fesses Up to PowerBook SuperDrive Issues

by , 4:25 PM EDT, October 25th, 2005

Apple has released a statement admitting: "Some earlier PowerBook G4 computers that have a SuperDrive with a 2X DVD-R write speed may not be able to burn 8X DVD-R media reliably. Because of this, you should only use 2X or 4X DVD-R media." As Softpedia notes in its coverage of the situation, this issue has been an ongoing one for several months.

The Web site also points out that Apple has done nothing to fix the problem, other than release an advisory statement. SuperDrives with UJ-816 in their model numbers are most likely to be affected by this performance issue.

That's an issue for a class action suite.

Subject: G5 desktops have a suspicious number of reported problems

My G5 desktop with a pioneer 106d superdrive is pretty messed up. It doesn't read about half the DVDs it burned. Apple's help pages have copious numbers of people saying the same thing about these drives. Not a word from Apple.

I have a 2x Superdrive PB that I bought on the very first day of availability, and I've burned my way through two 8x spindles without a single problem. System Profiler lists it as a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 drive. I've been using TDK 8x media, but I just bought some Memorex, maybe that won't work as well. Hope not, since it cost $20.

Unless this is an OS problem (which would then be patchable) or an incompatiblity of the drive to the internal electronics of the computer, the problem lies with the manufacturer of the drive. Correct?

When the system was introduced, like mine there was no such thing as 8x media. Apple needs to sue dumb asses like you.

What is the injury here? That people have to hunt around for 2-4x media? Sucky, but it beats having to keep buying anti-virus software.

These ass holes at Apple still haven't addressed the problem many iMac G4 users are having with their SuperDrives. Come on now, there is clearly a problem with these damn things, as so many owners are having the same problem. Plus Apple's support sucks balls.
