Computerworld Loves the New iMac

by , 9:35 AM EST, November 29th, 2005

Computerworld's Ulrika Hedquist recently had the opportunity to review the new iMac G5, and her biggest complaint was that she would eventually have to give it back. By comparison, her PC seemed loud, bulky, and suffered from a lack of design.

Ms. Hedquist was impressed with the overall design, calling it "shiny, white, minimalist." The attention to detail, like including a built-in iSight camera and the Mighty Mouse, along with a slot for holding the Front Row remote, set the new iMac apart from other computers.

She summed up her feelings on the iMac by saying "Please, don't make me part with this wonderful machine."

Subject: price???

Did you see the price that they quoted? Over $2300! I hope they amend that to make it more accurate. The 20" is $1700, and the 17" is only $1300!

Edit: Nevermind. The reviewer lives in Auckland, NZ, and the Apple link points to the New Zealand Apple website. Cripes, but they're expensive there!

At $1.426 USD to $1 NZD, the price is just about same

when I was in NZ in 2000, a NZ dollar was worth roughly .50 US. I'm sure the exchange rate is different now, but still, a NZ is not equivalent to a US dollar.

Subject: "Review" is lame

The review is outright lame, as it doesn't go into details as to why a person should seriously consider the iMac vs another system. The review is more feelings based than factual; and appears to merely contain the initial impmressions of the iMac (I just got this thing yesterday and 'I love it'). Listen, the iMac can't love ya back, lady.
And, besides, we're not hearing much from ComputerWorld-US, now are we?

My comments are directed at TMO for posting to their website of a review in a far-away land; and a reivew that, well, I don't think is truly a "review".

(hey, now, no flame wars. I just recently *FINALLY* convinced my Dad, after 20+ years of getting him to do such, to get a Mac. He bought the iMac G5 20" and is truly enjoying computing for the first time.
Plus, I'm a 10-year Apple [employee] Veteran)

I think the cost is in NZ dollar not US. Apple's prices internationally are more or less the same, give and take, depending on exchange rate.

NZ$2349 = US$1645, still a bit more expensive

What's that got to do with the price of fish? I'm not saying that the review is brilliant, or that ComputerWorld NZ is a particularly relevant publication (I wouldn't know, I'm not from NZ), but why should only US based reviews matter? A bit arrogant isn't it?

Again, with the very US-centric attitude. I realise that TMO is US based, but you'll find that it generally covers any Mac related stuff, not just that which happens in the US. From where I'm sitting, in Melbourne, Australia, the US is a "far-away land". Your post is reminiscent of the posts I used to get on mailing lists around ten years ago: "Are you foreign?" "No. I live right here in Australia." "But the internet is in the US"...

This isn't meant to be a flame. I just wanted to draw your attention to a few things in your post that are often interpreted as... I don't know how to word it politely. Let's just say that I know quite a few people who would read it and say "typical American".

And no, I'm not anti-American. I have plenty of American friends, I've lived in the US, and all that jazz. But I will tell you unequivocally that attitudes like those expressed in your post are the main reason why people outside the US resent the US.

We're all aware that the USA is the superpower. We all know that America is responsible for lots of great things. But we also know that there are places outside the US that also matter and also do great things. Sometimes it appears as though people inside the US forget this last fact.

I hope I'm not about to get flamed

Like I said, I'm not anti-American, I just get annoyed sometimes when _some_ Americans think that anything non-American is automatically inferior.

All that said, if the Australian government gets its way, we'll probably be a state of the US in the next 50 years. It's amazing John Howard can breathe with his head so far up George W. Bush's behind.

What was the article about again?
Schmidty.

It's not a far-away land. It's - well - here. You're far away. And why can't TMO post reviews from other countries? It's a Mac site, not a US site.

Pssst - that was me pouring a glass of dry honey-scented riesling on my flame.

attitude is obnoxious (and I was born in the U.S. and have spent all but five months of my life here)...

I haven't read the review, but even from the summary here on TMO it seems somewhat subjective. But at least she likes it, and for NZ$2300 she can take one home for herself when the review period ends.

Oh, and you're right about Howard, he's just compensating for not having shared a womb with Dumbya.
