WinTel 2.1.1 Improves Windows XP Support

by , 8:15 AM EST, February 23rd, 2006

OpenOSX announced the immediate availability of WinTel 2.1.1 on Thursday. WinTel emulates Intel's x86 architecture on your Mac, letting you run other operating systems at the same time as Mac OS X. The updated version fixes a problem using some CDs, adds more tutorials and documentation, zero-configuration (Bonjour) network support for Windows XP, and more. WinTel 2.1.1 is available for download at the OpenOSX Web site, and costs US$25, or $30 on CD-ROM.

WinTel 2.1.1 is available in versions for the G4, G5, and Intel processor.

If yes, what was the performance and stability like compared to Virtual PC on a Power PC based Mac? Would love for this to be an "as good" or "better than" replacement for VPC. I need a "Windows" option before I could consider replacing my PowerBook with a MacBook Pro.

I don't think its quite right to mention "OpenOSX" -- which piggybacks off open source projects while unfortunately having a very mixed record on support -- without mentioning the promising projects it utilizes.

In this case, Qemu.

For example, while still imperfect, "Q" over at http://www.kberg.ch/q/ is free, very open about its origins, and very much worth keeping an eye on it. It's looking better every day. ; )

It's infuriating to see these OpenOSX press releases reprinted without the critical information that this is open source software that you can get for free
(viz. http://free.oszoo.org/download.html ).

Unfortunately, both Bochs and QEmu are painfully slow running Windows. If you have to run Windows, Virtual PC offers far superior performance.

Perhaps in the future virtual machine monitors (e.g. Virtual PC/Xen/VMware/etc.) will allow you to run Windows simultaneously on your x86 Mac, and this should offer close to native performance.

But if Xen is ported to the Mac, you can be sure that OpenOSX will be leeching off it and trying to sell another piece of free software to suckers who read their press releases.

However, if you have an intel Mac, you'll find that Windows running under QEMU is blazingly fast, totally shaming VPC on either a G4 or G5.

I am running both XP and Windows 2000 under QEMU on my iMac Core Duo and its excellent.

Are you kidding me to promote this company. Go and buy their software and you can be an idiot like me. I bought their software, installed it per their instructions and guess what. I had the same issues I had using QEMU (which is free) and their software uses the same stuff with a pretty wrapper. I tried to contact them every day and some times twice a day to get some assistance. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..... no reply, no thank you for allowing us to steal from you nothing. Not even a kiss my a@@. Which is all fine, since I will be happy to give their software away now to anyone who wants it. Thanks for nothing OpenOSX - biggest thieves on the market.

I downloaded (the latest version of) QEMU today and tried to run it - by importing my Virtual XP Pro drive from my PB - but after importing it, it immediately stopped. Damn.

Nevertheless it looks as though it's almost there - if it can be done for free, how come Microsoft are going to take a year to do it? (and how do I know what a rhetorical question is?)
