iMac G5 Availability Slipping?

by , 9:20 AM EST, February 24th, 2006

Availability of Apple's 20-inch iMac G5 may be starting to slip. Although the company's online store still shows the last remaining iMac G5 model as available, its ship time has extended from 24 hours to 1-2 business days. The 20-inch iMac G5 is the last remaining non-Intel iMac model that Apple sells.

The iMac G5 was replaced at the Macworld Expo in January by the newer Intel Core Duo-based iMac. Apple has been selling both G5 and Intel-based iMacs ever since. The company phased out the 17-inch G5 model a few weeks ago without any fanfare, and most recently phased out the 15-inch PowerBook G4.

The PowerBook, which also uses a PowerPC-based processor, is being replaced by the Intel Core Duo-based MacBook Pro.

The slightly extended shipping time for may indicate that the 20-inch iMac G5 is close to quietly fading away, as well.

iMac G5 20" was spotted at Coscto on Febrruary 23. It was featured at the Midvale, Utah warehouse at $1,479.00. There was by the way, a crowd of customers showing cosiderable interest in this computer at this price. It is not often that you can get a Mac at warehouse club pricing!

Costco stores, well the nearby me, are selling G5 20" iMacs for $1500. 250 GB hard drive, includes 3 years of AppleCare, but only it only has 512 of RAM.

I see a Guest beat me to the post. I will add that it was the Costco in San Diego where I saw the iMacs. They had about 12 of them in boxes, I don't know if there were more in the back.

Well, I do no understand people that continues buying past technologies.

Do you need a iMac G5? Do you know that is a dead line computer...???

Okay, you need one to run non intel native or universal applications... them You must buy a PowerMac G5 not an iMac, MacMini, PowerBook o iBook.

Subject: The future is Intel

Since the entire Mac platform is going to be based on Intel chips shortly, the G5 iMac 20" is priced where it needs to be priced.
In several years, there will no G4 or G5 and Apple will have moved on.
So, while you may save a little now, the smart money looks to the future and thats what the Intel 20" iMac is all about.
See you at the Apple store
