Apple Scores Data Centers in Newark, Santa Clara

by , 10:10 AM EST, February 27th, 2006

Apple recently acquired a 107,000 square-foot data center in Newark, California for somewhere between US$45 and $50 million. According to the San Jose Business Journal, the facility was originally built for MCI WorldCom in 2001 and has never been occupied. The company also grabbed a 90,000 square-foot facility in Santa Clara, California.

Apple is not stating what it intends to use the facilities for, but they are most commonly used as highly redundant data storage and processing centers.

Apple also recently signed a deal for a 116,830 square-foot office center in on Ridgeview Court in Cupertino.

The San Jose Times assumes that its local readers know that Newark is in the San Francisco Bay Area. Had they meant New Jersey, they would have said so. Next up, a data center in Pittsburg (not in Pennsylvania)

Also, the article says Stream purchased the Santa Clara facility, not Apple. Apple is only mentioned in regards to the Newark and Cupertino properties.

It sounds to me like they are developing the infrastructure to support Full Length movie downloads.

Hmmm, big announcement from Apple tomorrow, something "Fun." Could be video, among other things.

apple didn't buy that property, the company that sold the newark property to apple happened to purchase another data center property in santa clara...so apple only purchased ONE data center (as well as the previously reported office space in cupertino)
