X-Win32 Server Runs on Intel Macs With Boot Camp
by , 2:50 PM EDT, April 26th, 2006
StarNet Communications on Wednesday confirmed that its X-Win32 server software installs and runs flawlessly on any Intel Mac with Boot Camp. X-Win32 enables users to connect to powerful engineering, database and networking applications running on remote Unix and Linux servers.
The company noted that while Mac OS X v10.4 includes an X11 X Windows utility, it lacks a session configuration tool that gives users the ability to set up sessions to a remote host. StarNet vice-president Paul Swart explained: "The Mac's X Windows utility was designed primarily to run X11-based applications locally on the Mac, not for displaying remote X desktops or running powerful engineering applications from a remote mainframe."
X-Win32 costs US$225 for a single commercial license.
Observer Comments
Honestly, do you need to do a report on every piece of Windows software that runs in boot camp? Everyone knows that all of this software is going to work. For the love of God, the software you are talking about in this article is a server based software. The macs with Intel processors aren't even server class machines! Please stop reporting on software that works with Boot Camp. We already know it works. Let's get back to good Macintosh reporting and talk about Mac software, not Windows software. I always enjoy those articles.

What is this? A Windows program? A Unix program? A Mac program that for some reason or another needs BootCamp? The article doesn't say. It just says it requires BootCamp. If it's a Windows program, then I agree with Guest completely. It's practically an insult to report on Windows software here.
When Mac sites start writing articles about Windows programs, I really start to believe the doomsayers. Maybe BootCamp really WILL bring about the death of the Mac.

Seriously. What gives? Is every article outside a narrowly defined set of parameters with Apple, Jobs or iPod in them too "unmaclike" to be considered worthwhile?
What will you do? Not play your iPod for an hour in protest?
At least Jimothy bothered to find out what it is and isn't.
While I appreciate you giving me credit, the reason this is irrelevant (I'll leave it up to you to decide if it's interesting) to a Mac web site is that a) This is a Windows program that, duh, runs on Windows. Surely we don't expect TMO to have an article for every Windows application. b) It's neither the only, nor best, way to run UNIX X-Windows applications on your Mac. You can run them locally (since Mac OS X is UNIX-based and supports X11), or use the X11 included to run them remotely, without dual booting.
My comment about "what it is" was meant to show how ridiculous it is to run such a program on a Mac, but apparently I was too subtle.

Ok, explain what's newsworthy about it, please.
Windows runs on Macs now. This program runs in Windows.
What, exactly, is newsworthy about learning that this program will work on a Mac? Shouldn't we be surprised if it DOESN'T run? This is like writing an article that Safari works on a Mac. Yeah, we know.

I was pretty sure what it was to begin with. But the fact that it was not 100% clear by reading the article only makes the artical that much more out of place here.

Well, if this becomes a trend at Mac Observer, I will certainly stop visiting. I really hope it doesn't become a trend. iPod news is annoying enough, but Windows news? Don't let Windows developers start marketing to Mac users like this. Mac users want Mac software, not Windows software.
As for the title question: well, tell me, why would this be interesting? I can make toast on my Mac Mini if I put a toaster on top of it. Does anybody care?
