Apple Files European Patent For Collaborative Version of iChat
by , 11:00 AM EDT, April 28th, 2006
Apple recently filed for a European patent that covers a version of iChat the company compared to an "interactive whiteboard," Macworld UK reported on Friday. According to the article, the new version of iChat would enable users to exchange and manipulate a variety of media, including audio, video, images, and documents, via a common window.
The patent also explores adding functionality to iChat that would enable it to determine what both computers involved in a chat are capable of, so that the software could become more compatible with other instant-messaging applications.
Observer Comments
I have my iChat open all day, every day for working with other architects around the country (it's an escellant way to sen file too large for email). We do pretty well with voice and using screen shots, and even occasionally, turn on the ol' iSight, but an interactive whiteboard... OMG, that would be outstanding!
Because virtual whiteboards haven't been around for YEARS before this? WTF.
I even played around with an Apple program from the mid '90s for doing video/audio/whiteboard conferencing, it never saw the light of day as a real consumer app.
Seams apple is just rehashing old ideas these days, claiming they're "new and original".
So sad.
