DivX 6.5 Offers Full-Screen Video Playback, Universal Binary, More [UPDATED]
by , 1:55 PM EDT, May 25th, 2006
DivX, Inc. on Thursday issued DivX 6.5 for Mac, the latest version of the video player that also includes the DivX 6 QuickTime plug-in. This upgrade features full-screen playback of DivX videos, a desktop dimmer, mouse gesture controls, window fade-out, and more.
Other changes include the ability to convert movies into the DivX format, complete with the necessary HTML code to embed them in Web pages for use with the DivX Web Player. The full version of DivX for Mac 6.5 is US$19.99, although the QuickTime plug-in portion of the software is free. QuickTime 7 and Mac OS X v10.3.9 are required.
In response to a reader's question, The Mac Observer contacted DivX, Inc. and received information regarding Universal Binary support in the new update. The DivX codec, the DivX Web Player and the playback and conversion engines in the DivX Player and DivX Converter are Universal Binaries, which means they should all run fine on PowerPC or Intel Macs.
The user interfaces for the DivX Player and DivX Converter are still PowerPC-enabled, which means they will use Rosetta on Intel Macs. Given the fact that those are just the interfaces and not the underlying engines, however, users shouldn't see any problems on Intel hardware.
DivX 6.5 for Mac is available for download on the DivX Web site now.

I see no mention of 6.5 anywhere on the Divx site. The latest version I see is 6.2, and that's just for Windows. Am I missing something?
As for Intel support, Divx has had a Universal binary available at their beta site for some time now. Get it at http://community.divx.com/labs/?cid=3. I've used it on Intel Macs and it seems to work great.
Hello we just posted it live a few minutes ago

Also;
There is a movie that accompanies this release; it is extremely funny (well IMHO)

It's up, and I downloaded it. Seems fine so far. Divx Player will be a welcome addition to anyone without QuickTime Pro, but I'll stick with QuickTime Player, personally. Divx Player is ugly and doesn't have the features of QTP.
But why are they calling it 6.5? The codec version is 6.2, same as on Windows. We have version 1.0.1 of Divx Player and version 6.2.2 of the Divx codec, combined to make "Divx 6.5"? That's an awfully confusing numbering system they're using.
