Japanese Trade Ministry Orders Laptop Battery Investigation

by , 2:10 PM EDT, August 25th, 2006

Japan's trade ministry has told Sony and Dell that they must investigate the problems plaguing the 4.1 million laptop batteries recalled last week and issue a report, or face a fine. The companies have until the end of August to comply, according to an Associated Press story.

The ministry pointed to two incidents where the batteries in Dell laptops imported to Japan overheated and caught fire. Sony's own Vaio laptops don't use the same batteries and thus aren't affected.

Sony - "Our laptops don't catch on fire", "Our laptops don't use inferior batteries"

Of course Sony is the one that made those batteries that are now plaguing their competition. This is the best move Sony has made in years, great way to kill off your competition!
