Apple Debuts New Get a Mac Ads
by , 8:55 AM EDT, August 28th, 2006
Apple introduced three new Get a Mac commercials on Sunday. Accident highlights the MagSafe power connector on the MacBook and MacBook Pro, Angel/Devil shows off how easy it is to be creative with a Mac, and Trust Mac points out that Mac OS X is not susceptible to Windows spyware applications. The commercials feature the now familiar Mac played by Justin Long, and PC played by John Hodgman.

Pretty funny.
Can one infer that the ads are working since they come back for a second act?

Sort of. I understand they shot them all at the same time. So, yes, they could have canned the rest if the first ones were a failure but no, it doesn't mean they shot "more" after the first ones. These were already done.
All in all, I like these a LOT more. I think featuring little things like magnetic connectors and iPhoto books is a lot more productive than saying things like "PCs just do spreadsheets and are for nerds."
The old ads seemed to annoy a lot of people they were trying to attract. The new ones are more about the Mac's positives rather than the PCs negatives.
I must say i love the comercials. After using a PC for 12 years i was finally fed up with windows crashing and losing work, emails etc.
I had previously looked at switching to a mac, but couldn't ever justify the price difference until the final crash. I went out and bought a quad G5 system (a little irritated since this was 3 mos ago and the mac pro is now out) only knowing that it was based on Darwin.
So to answer the question to whether or not the ad's work? They did for me and i am sure many others as well. I have been using OS X Tiger for the last 3 months and have a record downtime of 3 months on my PC WOO HOO!!!
Since Justin Long shaved the pubic hair off his face, he looks less like a bad Dylan McDermott impersonator and more like bad Tom Cruise impersonator. Also, the sound that the MagSafe connector makes when disconnected is disturbing. If I go into an Apple Store and some employee makes that sound while demonstrating the connector, I will cast a quick glance to my leg to make sure nothing is humping it.
I wish that Apple would not portray Mac as the slacker looking guy. If they want to attract business types then make the Mac look more "professional", plenty of pros use Macs. Of course a lot of us artistic types look scruffy, but not all of us. I for one am into a blend, jeans and an expensive dress shirt with tie, hiking/walking shoes (not boots) on my feet, when I am not practicing naturism, businessman haircut and a Czar Alexander II beard.
On the other hand not all PCs look like businessmen, many of the PC users I know are genuine slackers and dress the part; They also have scruffy PC computers picked up second hand or donated by their more successful kith.
This isn't saying that I am not enjoying this ad campaign. Maybe the next time they could get the Capital One barbarians to play the PC guys.

Damn Edison, how do you keep the ladies off?
It can be tough, and expensive, managing several mistresses concurrently, but it is a cross I have to "bare"
Seriously I feel that often Apple is preaching to the choir with these stereotypes, but then I am thinking that maybe at the end of the ad campaign that John Hodgman will switch to the Mac and live happily ever after.
I still like the idea of using the barbarians. "Times have been so hard for us pillagers that we have had to take jobs as graphic artists. WHATS ON YOUR DESKTOP?"
Gotta run, for the day

No matter who they choose to do the ad's you would still have people having opinions like this. They could have used the Cave Men, but then people would be irritated that the mac guy was in a suit, etc. I think the Casual look works for Mac. Yes people fom all standards use the mac (except for those who leech on welfare but that's another topic).

Man I wish the MacBook made that sound every time the cord came out. I would go around the Apple store pulling the out at random. It would be sweet.

"Next time I will do a little research"
The Cavemen, hmmm. That would be good, we could have them saying "Macintosh, it is so easy even homo sapiens can use it"
