Newer Tech Debuts G4 Upgrades Up to 2GHz

Newer Technology on Thursday began shipping a new line of MAXPower Power Mac G4 upgrades at prices starting at US$399 for the single processor 2GHz version. The dual processor 1.6GHz version is $449, while dual processor 1.7GHz is $529 and dual processor 1.8GHz is $599.

The upgrades are compatible with the Sawtooth, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio, and Quicksilver G4 Power Mac models. Mac OS 9.2.2 or Mac OS X v10.3.5 is required.

I still fear that G4 processor upgrades are on their last straw. The move to Intel and their compatible apps marks a dramatic shift away from PPC and developers will go where the new market is.

And I note there still aren't good G4 upgrades for MDD G4 Macs. If you have a Dual 1.25 G4 MDD, your options are almost nonexistant except to replace it. And considering the Mac Mini Solo Core is considered as fast when maxed out with Ram at what is 1/4th the cost, of what it originally cost, it makes sense now to replace it.

It's sad. But true. The switch to Intel will leave a lot of Macs in the dust. Or swamp I'm afraid.

I'm also curious about how others see it.

Sorry Tiger, I won't shed a tear. We will still be able to use [most] G4's with Leopard, but beyond that, I won't care much. But if you're like Atreyu, you don't have to let the sadness of the swamps get to you. You can hold your head up high and not sink to the bottom. Of course, you could still use an SE/30 today if you wanted to... but it wouldn't be fun for long.

... now if I could just find a buyer for my "old" dual 2.0 G5....
