I'm a New Yorker myself, and I'm not really sure we need a third in Manhattan (there are already three in NYC, just for the record; one is in Staten Island). The two stores are already only 20 minutes apart (by subway). A third one right between them would seem excessive.

Personally, I feel no shortage of Mac shops in Manhattan. We've already got two Apple stores, Tekserve (which should be everyone's first stop, by the way) and Digital Society, plus J&R has a floor dedicated to Mac stuff.

Then again, every time I go to the Fifth Avenue store, it's pretty crowded. Hmm.

I would disagree with Mikuro. I rarely get to see either of the two stores, since I live more-or-less half way between, and it takes me more than 20 minutes to get to either. While there certainly is no shortage of Mac shops (and in addition to those mentioned above, there is 2 CompUSA locations), Apple stores are always busy. Anyone who has been there at 3 AM on a Tuesday night can confirm this (and let's not even talk about Saturday afternoon!).

The new location (at the bottom of the Empire State Building) will be just perfect. It will attract crowds that don't go to either of the existing ones. It is quite possible that it will also be 24/7.

As long as Apple keeps opening them, people will keep coming there. They are the epitomy of cool. Everyone likes cool. Even if you don't know what they're selling, you'll walk in and check it out!

I'd say apple might need the extra store if just for the genius bar alone, the turn around at the MidTown store is horrible up to two weeks+ at times.

I visit family in Manhattan often, though I haven't been since the 5th Ave store opened.

Would those who live there mind sharing a quick list (same as above) of locations with addresses? I like to hit Mac stores locally and when I'm on the road to find deals on stock that is a few months old.

I stay in Battery Park when I'm in town, so the lower half of the island is preferable.

A more pleasant place for Mac repairs and browsing.
Apple stores are better if you need an iPod repaired or laptop backpacks.
Tekserve is better at:
- peripheral/software advice and pricing
- prosumer audio/video hardware and software,
- unique Apple accessories
- being human beings

We tend to be nicer and more patient, too.

I agree with the above poster about Tekserve. They have the best selection of Mac peripherals, by a long shot. I have to say I'm not wild about the "deli counter" atmosphere, but it seems to be the only place in the city where you can find a decent mouse, so I really don't care. You should check it out even if you don't need anything, because the place is just plain cool.

Digital Society is a very small shop. Not much in the way of selection. I go there mainly for repairs and upgrades, and I'll go there again next time I need one. It's on 60 E 10th street, very close to the N line (get out at 8th). See http://www.digsoc.com/

J&R is also near the N line. Get out at City Hall. It's hard to miss. Top floor is dedicated to Apple stuff (but you'd better check the PC floor for cross-platform peripherals like mice and DVD burners). They have a lot of iPod stuff there. They also do repairs.
