DealsOnTheWeb Daily Deal: It's Friday, time for the Amazon Friday Sale!
This is Apple ... Hold Please
by , 12:30 PM EST, December 26th, 2006
Apple has remained silent about a cell phone. Some people are wondering if this is the right time to buy Apple stock, or defer. And if Apple does ship a phone, people are wondering how it will fit into the existing structure of the cell phone business. These were the issues brought up in a Wall Street Journal article Friday. [Subscription required.]
All of Apple's issues were laid out. Will an Apple cell phone with music capability cannibalize iPod sales? Next, Apple's stock is already considered overvalued by some. Buying now could be a risk if the Apple cell phone disappoints. However, the article also proposed that Apple has a huge opportunity. Six million cell phones sold in 2007 and 12 million in 2009 would generate an estimated US$5.41B in revenue.
There are other considerations cited: "Apple would have to take on the responsibilities of ... billing and customer service." Also, Apple's iPod business model conflicts the the current system of virtually giving away hardware and charging for services. Disney's own cell phone service failed when Disney's customers were luke warm to the services offered.
Apple is faced with a delicate balancing act. Apple's investors and analysts are uncertain about Apple's business model and the direction of the technology. There are many opportunities to go wrong. How Apple wades through all these perils has everybody watching.
Observer Comments
I for one believe the rumors that Apple will forbid the carriers from subsidizing the cost of the Apple phones. The more I think about it, the more I think it just might work. Once again Apple would be doing exactly the opposite of what you would expect and somehow managing to get away with it. I think this will just be the beginning of how Apple could change the cell phone industry.
I personally rate AAPL a buy regardless of whether you are looking for a short term or longer term investment.
Wed Dec 27, 2006 11:50 pm Subject: Long-winded speculation
My December podcast includes some iPhone speculation. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, the iPhone part starts near 9:58.
i agree that they wouldn't want to subsidize... though i don't think they will be the only ones to do that. i am fairly confident that nokia, motorola and sony would quickly follow suit, seeing as how for years they have been trying to bring the value of cell phones above that of a commodity. they never did it out of fear that the competition would get the better of them. Cell phone manufacturers have been very vocal about the fact that they need to make exclusive models for the different carriers; it cannibalizes sales of some models (motorola pebl or slvr anyone?) that could easily take the market by storm if they were sold a'la carte.
this would probably lead to either or both of 2 things:
1. better plans from carriers (without cell phones to lock you in, they need to find other incentives to bring you in)
2.much more comprehensive cell phone insurance plans.
both are things i would gladly pay a couple bucks more for...
