OWC Lowers Prices for Apple-Qualified Mac Pro Memory
by , 12:00 AM EST, February 22nd, 2007
Other World Computing (OWC) announced lower prices and immediate availability on Wednesday for their Apple-qualified Mac Pro memory modules. The savings were described as 50% or more compared to factory installed or competitors' pricing.
The new prices are as follows:
- 1GB Matched Sets (512MB Module x 2) for as low as $197.25/GB
- 2GB Matched Sets (1.0GB Module x 2) for as low as $166.13/GB
- 4GB Matched Sets (2.0GB Module x 2) for as low as $168.69/GB
OWC said that a cash-back rebate of up to $250 per set is also available from OWC for the trade-in of Apple factory memory. Available immediately, the OWC Memory Upgrade Modules consist of matched pairs of FB-DIMM modules manufactured to Apple's stringent Mac Pro specifications, far exceeding JEDEC (the leading developer of solid-state industry standards) specifications.
Full details and prices are at OWC's Mac Pro Memory page.
Observer Comments
I *think* that they have also lowered the price on other Intel Mac-compatible memory. Their 2GB upgrade for the iMac Core Duo is now only $195 + shipping. I recall it being a bit over $200 not long ago. Considering that my local Mac dealer wants more than $200 for ONE 1GB module, the OWC price is great! (It is only $97.50/GB.)
Food for thought if you're considering upgrading...
The MacPro's architecture is designed to run faster if you have 4+ dimms installed since it has 2 memory controllers (and each one requires dimms in pairs). So it is better to have 4 512MB dimms than 2 1GB dimms.
How much of a difference is there? I have no idea. It might not even be worth talking about, but technically there is a difference. Just think twice before selling your old ones back to OWC...
