Backwards Machine Reverses Audio In Real-time

by , 8:20 AM EST, March 8th, 2007

The Sound Guy, Inc. announced the immediate availability of the audio plug-in Backwards Machine on Thursday. Backwards Machine is available as a VST or Audio Units plug-in. It supports reversing incoming audio sources in real-time, cross-fades between forward and backward versions of audio, and repeating reversed loops. Backwards Machine is available for download at the SFX Machine Web site, and is priced at US$35.

...as it seems impossible to reverse material in "real time" since bthe very definition of reverse playback is that it starts with the last note and begins with the first note... so how can an app reverse something in real time if it needs the final note to begin?

Joe: Most likely this means is that it can play back sound regions ALREADY RECORDED in real time. Just like you can hit the "reverse time" box in Final Cut Pro to play a shot backwards--one that has already been digitized, that is.

On the other hand, if it is really able to reverse incoming audio, it obviously has to do it to a cached, time delayed buffer. Maybe that hour glass allows you dial in the window you're reversing. No space time continuum warping here. At least in this version.

Either way, it's kind of limited use.

Maybe it uses a singularity to peer through time and play backward what you were going to say, so that it appears to be doing it in real time. I'd pay $35 for that!
