Intel Cuts Prices on Core 2 Duos

by , 12:40 PM EDT, April 24th, 2007

Intel has cut the price on its mainstream Core 2 Duo chips up to 40 percent over the weekend, according to ExtremeTech. The Quad-core processor price was also reduced.

The 2.66 GHz (E6700) Core 2 Duo is now priced at US$316, a 40 percent cut. The 2.4 GHz (E6600) and 2.13 GHz (E6400) were also reduced to $224 and and $183 respectively. The Intel chart on these processors is on their Website.

In addition, Intel cut the price on its Quad-core Q6600 by 38 percent. The new price is US$530.

This is good news for Apple customers, but the move is probably designed to put more pressure on AMD as well as prepare for the next generation Penryn CPUs due later this year.

The main reason Woz chose the 6502 for the Apple ][ was that the CPU cost $1.

Why is this good for Apple/Mac users? Apple won't lower their prices. Hell, the Core Duo mini has never dropped in price and I'm sure Intel is giving away those processors.

Actually, a price drop IS a possibility, though I suspect a "back to school" bundle including an iPod or printer is more likely. More importantly, this likely signals a speed bump to the C2D coming soon or the move to Penryn/Santa Rosa is coming soon.

University campus computer stores already have a current special that fives a free 4GB iPod with the purchase of any Mac.
