Newertech Announces miniStack Drive Plus Hub

by , 1:25 PM EDT, June 28th, 2007

Newer Technology announced on Thursday the immediate availability of the miniStack v3 Quad Interface powered hub plus storage solution with up to 1 TB of internal storage.

The ergonomically unique rear and side ports combine one eSATA, two FireWire 800, one FireWire 400, and three USB 2.0 ports. The result allows a combination of external storage and powered hubs for additional accessories like scanners, digital cameras, and iPods, simultaneously and clutter free.

The storage unit uses the latest generation Oxford 924 bridge chipset, the fastest drive mechanisms available (7,200 rpm), and an eSATA port to deliver the fastest single drive data transfer rates possible: up to 150 Megabytes per second.

Other features include: a passive radiator heat sink, intelligent thermal monitoring, whisper quiet operation engineering, and a stackable design. The units is about 6.5-inch (17 cm) square and 1.5-inch (4 cm) high and includes a Kensington Security Slot.

The Newer Technology miniStack v3 Quad Interface starts at US$169.95 for 160 GB. The 1 TB unit is priced at US$549.99.

I have the 1/2 terrabyte unit, previous generation, without eSATA slot. I bought it for the form factor, to stack underneath my Mini and save space on my desk. My miniStack + a Mac Mini fit nicely underneath an Apple 20" display. But since then, I've abandoned the desk and moved the Mini into the living room, hooking it up to a 46" Sony XBR3. The Mini and miniStack are without a doubt the nicest looking components on the cart. Everyone who sees it admires how clean it looks and what such a small total package can do.

I just took delivery of 500GB minStack v2 yesterday. Maybe I should have taken a clue from the 1/2 price 2nd Day Air shipping from OWC and figured out that they wanted to clear inventory. C'est la vie, I needed to expand my storage and from what I see the only thing I am missing out on is the eSATA port. Besides by the time I need eSATA I will probably need several terrabytes of storage, I remember being excited about my 600MB external hard drive.

Like Bosco one of the reasons I chose this unit is for the form factor, the small footprint. an Apple TV would sit nicely on top of it. Also it comes with a sweet little FireWire cable that is only about 12" long and helps keep the cable tangle down behind the computer. I don't have it connected to a Mac mini, but to my iSight iMac.

The hub feature of these miniStacks are nice. I have my iPod dock and a Griffin iMic attached.

More likely the other way around. Despite the appearance, the Apple TV is slightly larger (7.7" square) than the Mac Mini (6.5" square).

Whoa! I had missed that. I see a 7.7" Mini with 3.5" drive in the future...
