Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Windows Released, Mac Version on the Way

by , 9:20 AM EDT, September 24th, 2007

Adobe announced the immediate availability of Photoshop Elements 6 on Monday. Unfortunately for Mac users the new version is Windows-only, but a Mac version will be available in early 2008.

Photoshop Elements is a consumer-oriented digital image editing application without some of the features found in its pro-level cousin Photoshop CS3. The new version added more automation features, an updated Quick Selection tool, an updated interface, and more.

Photoshop Elements 4 is the most recent version of the image editing application for the Mac. Presumably the new Mac version will incorporate many of the same features found in version 6 for Windows, and will also run natively on Intel-based Macs.

I sure hope "early" means January. It's ridiculous that Mac users have had to wait so long for an update.

Part of the problem I believe is that Adobe isn't getting enough time to test thier software on the latest Mac OS, if they released it and you upgraded and suddenly your Adobe products stopped working, well, you'd be even more pissed at Adobe than you are now. I believe there was an article on this site about how Apple wasn't providing Adobe with with enough resources to ensure their products are stable on OS X.

Adobe would be crazy to release it without ensuring it functions well on Leopard. After 10.5 is released they will probably test the hell out of it, correct a few bugs and then release it.

Installed 10.5 last night (Archive and Install). Tried to run Elements 2.0 this morning and it crashed. Reinstalled and same thing.

According to the Adobe Docs, PE 4.0 and earlier are no go, so now I'm halted in any photoshop work until PE 6 is out for Mac.
