Iomega Launches Mac Hard Drive Lineup

by , 12:15 AM EDT, September 25th, 2007

Iomega pulled the veil off of its new hard drive line up geared towards Mac users at Apple Expo 2007 in Paris on Tuesday. The drives are available in capacities up to 1.5TB, come pre-formatted for Mac users, and include Dantz Retrospect Express backup software.

Iomega's UltraMax Lineup.

The new 1.5TB UltraMax Pro Desktop Hard Drive includes two hot swappable SATA-II hard drives, supports RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD, and sports FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0 interfaces along with cables for each connection. It is priced at US$599.95.

The single drive quad interface UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive is available in 500GB and 750GB capacities, and includes eSATA, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0 ports. All necessary cables are included, and will be available in October. The 500GB model will be priced at US$219.95, and the 750GB unit will cost $319.95. A 500GB version with FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports will also available for $189.95.

Iomega's 750GB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive matches the look of Apple's Mac mini and 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station and includes a built-in three-port USB 2.0 hub and three-port FireWire 400 hub. It offers a stackable design that helps save desk space, and is also available in a 500GB USB 2.0-only model designed for sharing through an AirPort Extreme Base Station. The 705GB MiniMax is priced at $319.99, and the 500GB USB-only model costs $179.95.

What do you mean by "rebranded drives"? Almost all external drive manufacturers (LaCie, EZQuest, Glyph, Micronet, WiebeTech, etc) use hard drive mechanisms built by someone else. They build the enclosure and add the controller, power supply, and interface circuitry. By that logic, an iMac is just a rebranded Core 2 Duo CPU.

On another topic, I've read elsewhere about the striking resemblance of the new Iomega drives to the Mac Pro. That surely is not accidental.
