Apple Sells 2M Copies of Leopard in First Weekend

by , 9:15 AM EDT, October 30th, 2007

Apple's Mac OS X 10.5, or Leopard, seems to be off to a fast start. The Cupertino company announced on Tuesday that it has already sold over two million copies of its latest operating system in the first weekend it was available. The first weekend sales figures for Leopard outpaced Mac OS X 10.4 opening weekend sales, making it the most successful OS launch in the company's history.

Leopard was released on Friday, October 26 after a delay of several months. Customers lined up outside Apple's retail stores -- in some cases hours in advance -- to get copies as soon as they were available.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs commented "Early indications are that Leopard will be a huge hit with customers."

The sales figures include copies sold at Apple retail stores, Apple Authorized Resellers, the online Apple Store, under maintenance agreements, and those bundled with new computers. Mac OS X 10.5 is priced at US$129 for a single user license, or $199 for a five-user family pack.

Subject: Compared to Vista

Vista sold 20 million copies in the first month ( http://www.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUSN2637930120070326?pageNumber=1 ). Of course, we don't know what Apple's first month figures will be, but if they sell the same amount each week that they sold in the first weekend, that'd amount to 8 million copies. Even a more conservative figure of 5 million is still impressive, considering Apple has less than a tenth of Window's market share.

The point? Apple's customers are excited about this new release, as is the press. That's bound to improve Apple's market share as word continues to get around. Not to mention a healthy contribution to the bottom line from the software sales.

were in pre-sales that they haven't delivered on? Like me? I preordered on copy of the media and 15 licenses, and as of Friday, it's backordered now until November 6th. And that's on an educational instutition credit card! I guess they're filling the full-price retail copy orders first to fill up the cash coffers.

Just judging by my local Apple Store, there were well over 200 people in line when they opened the doors at 6. Considering the 7 million macs they've sold so far this year, 2 million barely begins to fill the "need" of people for this software.

Today's (10/31) WSJ is reporting that all the sales came from standalone copies, which sounds improbable to me. But is that possible?

Absolutely! With only $15 billion in cash, they're desperate to exploit that $60 price differential.

... or not.
