NPD: Apple's Leopard Best OS Launch Ever

by , 2:20 PM EST, December 18th, 2007

Apple's launch of Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard, was its best OS launch ever, according to the NPD Group on Monday.

The sales of Apple's Leopard were compared to the launch of Tiger in May of 2005. In the first full month of sales of Leopard in November, unit volume was up 20.5 percent and dollar volume was up 32.8 percent compared to Tiger's launch. Reuters carried the story.

While the overall increase in unit sales compared to Tiger could be partially attributable to the November holiday buying season, compared to Tiger's May launch, NPD said that the success shows Apple has found the right formula for rolling out a new Macintosh OS.

Since Tiger sold for the same amount, US$129, in 2005, the better dollar volume number might be attributable to a higher proportion of family pack sales for Leopard.
