Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.
Happy indeed...

Happy indeed...
Is it a day to be happy that brave men and women had to die to protect our country? NO!
It is a day to pay homage to, and yes, celebrate the memory of our loved ones that had the courage to defend our freedom. It should be a relatively happy day, or would you rather be living in a worldwide Third Reich...or a worldwide U.S.S.R.
I didn't think so.

We are just WAY to focused on being "happy" - as if that is the only word in our vocabulary and the only thing that matters in our one-dimensional lives. There is nothing wrong with being happy, but perhaps on a solemn day such as Memorial Day, the better word would be "blessed" - which has a much broader sense of "well being" to it. It certainly is the case that we are "blessed" to remember and honor those who have given their lives so that we can be much more than "happy".

I went to The Indy 500 with my father on Sunday. They had their usual Parade of Stars before the race. The real applause, however, was reserved for the men and women in the five branches of the armed service who were there as special guests of the Hulman-George family ... as it should be.
