Twitter Gears Up for WWDC 08

Twitter may have its ups and downs, but the company is hoping that it has done what it takes to keep its social networking and micro-blog Web site up and running during Apple's World Wide Developer Conference this week. The company claims it is prepared for a ten fold increase in daily traffic during the week-long event.

According to a Twitter Blog post, "We've moved much of the load off our database by utilizing more memcache, employing more read-slave servers, and by fixing some bugs for improved efficiency."

The site is also ready to take measures to help ensure twitter stays online should the user load exceed expectations. Many of the site's features now have back-end on/off switches so secondary features like stats and pagination can be disabled to give additional resources to primary features like posting and reading tweets.

Just how well Twitter's changes work has yet to be seen since the heaviest usage time, meaning the Steve Jobs keynote presentation, is still a few hours away.
