Psystar Announces Two New Servers with OS X Server Option [UPDATED]

by , 3:30 PM EDT, June 20th, 2008

Psystar has announced two new rack-mount servers. The 1U OpenServ 1100 has an Intel Xeon Harpertown CPU (2.5 GHz) Quad core processor in the base configuration and four drive bays. The 2U OpenServ 2400 has six drive bays. OSes supported include Microsoft Server 2003/2008, CentOS, Ubuntu Server, and Mac OS X Leopard Server.

The default configuration for the OpenServ 1100 includes CentOS 5.1 Linux, 4 GB RAM, and one 750 GB 7,200 RPM drive.

The OpenServ 2400 is a 2U configuration to make room for six drive bays that can hold up to 6 TB. Otherwise, the base configuration is the same.

The OpenServ 1100 base configuration is priced at US$1,599 and the 2400 at $1,999.

For an additional US$525, Mac OS X Server with a 10 user license is included. For $1,100 Mac OS X Server with a license for unlimited users is included.

TMO has asked Psystar about the bundling of Mac OS X Server with respect to Apple's licensing terms, but has not received a response as of this writing. Availability was cited as immediate in their online store, and the Psystar Shopping Cart is set up to take orders.

[UPDATE: TMO was contacted by a Psystar representative late on Friday who provided the following information. First, they have no comment about any legal issues with regard to Apple. The spokesperson, however, did say that Psystar has not been contacted by Apple. Next, all the computers are fabricated in Miami, not by a third party. That's to insure quality control. Delivery is estimated at 3-7 days and "thousands" of systems have been sold. In terms of the OS X option, Psystar does not modify Mac OS X in any way. They do add some software to the hardware so that Mac OS X can install and run. Finally, if the customer chooses the OS X option, the OS is both pre-installed and a boxed copy of the OS is also provided.]

I agree with Websnap. Apple better get off their a$$ and deal with these people or they will loose control of the platform (IMO).

And yes they have been delivering product. I've read a number of reviews on the web and reports from the field from people who're playing with Psystar systems.

Why aren't they in oblivion? Maybe Apple is building the case against them, letting them have enough rope to really hang themselves with some hard core copyright violations. Maybe they are still in the phase of exchanging cease and desist letters and bugger off letters. Whatever, the "case" may be, I would think that Apple is lining up their main batteries.

From what I read some people have received orders of the desktop Mac clones. I haven't read a review of their products in a while, but from what have read I would lief go back to setting type in a composing stick before buying something from PsyStar. Can any of the readers here point us to a recent review?

Has anyone actually investigated who owns Psystar?

Is ownership apparent, or is it a parent, or a dummy child corporation for somebody else.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Could it be that Apple is seriously considering opening the operating system license to computers other than those made by Apple. Remember that Apple had OS X running on Intel machines years before it was released when Apple decided to go to Intel chips. I can't believe that there was nobody at Apple during this period who was advocating to put the operating system on ANY Intel machine. (I think Woz would fall into this category, even though he no longer has an official position or influence at Apple.) This approach may be required for Apple to grow further into certain enterprise and government contracts.

Perhaps this is really what Snow Leopard is all about. Yes, stability is a concern for the current Intel Macs running OS X Leopard and everyone would like a faster system, but a year of development to come out with a newly named operating system just to fix some bugs that in the past were fixed with .x and .x.x updates to the existing system? Maybe Apple is trying to get the operating system fast and STABLE on both Apple and NON-APPLE computers in prep for the big unveiling. It would make sense to spend extra time on this because if they get it wrong then they could loose their shirts. Or maybe if have just been fooled by another Apple Snow (Leopard) Job!

I doubt it. With the increase in sales in the last few years they are doing insanely well with hardware sales, and until that profit margin reaches a max they are not going to let go of their major Mac profits. Remember, they don't get that much profit off the OS itself. Look at M$ and their pricing, that is the only way they make a profit there even with their market domination.

That said, it could happen, but if it does, it is up to the 3rd party vendors to make it stable on their systems, not Apple.

MacNano, stability is extremely important, and they have to fix the bugs that are there. Plus, the additions under the hood could be huge for stability, speed AND development. Its not nothing, its just not what the run-of-the-mill user will get excited about. But I will!

That's right, based on what was said as soon as Apple switched to Intel Apple has been aware that attempting to legally keep OS X off of other virtually identical hardware from a different source would be an uphill battle. Since Apple is running OS X on hardware that has no proprietary Apple technology Apple can do nothing about people running the OS on identical hardware just not produced by Apple.

I doubt Apple has any intention of pursuing legal action at any point against Psystar. Alternatively, Apple will probably move forward on three paths to resolve the problem that they fully expected to develop. First, EFI v.8, which allows Psystar assembled to run OS X, is firmware, and it will be changed the OS will be tuned to identify it and not install. The leash on the developers of EFI will be tightened, and/or Apple will get it's own license to take EFI development for their hardware in-house. The next thing which will have longer ramifications will be that Apple probably will integrate some chip design built by the PA Semi group as a coprocessor to assist in taking on CORE computations versus pushing all of that off to constantly changing gpu subsystems and all of that is in addition to PA Semi doing SOC designs for the iPod and iPhone. The third thing will be that hopefully Apple will investigate WHY so many people are are trying to build Hackintoshes. (Inexpensive but upgradable MidTower) and Apple will release a Intel Core processor based mid tower. If they do all of these things it should pretty much eliminate the clone issue and help to build an even larger user base.
